I sent a PM to tydye about that 1818 with the graffiti on it, asking if he might entertain an offer. It looks like "Jill" (might be G.U.) which is my wife's name and she's always thought it'd be cool to get an old coin with that kind of graffiti on it. He wrote back saying its a 104a and he needs it for the set, but hey, do I have any half dimes to trade? He'd certainly listen. No half dimes, just a wife named Jill.

Anyhoo, that die crack intrigued me and I went digging a little further after I sent the request to tydye and before I heard back from him. I was thinking of maybe doubling his $50 investment but after digging some more I couldn't do that with a good conscience now because it sure looks like it's the 104b variety. R7, buddy!

Check out the CoinZip site for the 104b and it talks about that crack becoming as big as the one he has, plus a few other indicators that are probably present on his worn coin when in hand with a decent lens and light. Here's the link.

    http://coinzip.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=1818b&action=display&thread=1531

Why don't some of you check it out and see if he's got something a lot rarer than he maybe realizes.

Or, I could be wrong. Happens a few times every minute...

My engraved piece has all 3 die cracks like the one you listed. Is there anything else I should be looking for? My 3rd edition overton does not list a 104b

I am ENJOYING this thread. drddm's 1814 makes me marvel again at how messed up things seemed to be that year. Amazing die clashes.

tydye seems to have come out OK today. His 1818 104 seems to be the "B" state - R.7!! In addition to the die cracks (that JRocco helped to illustrate) there is a sizeable die chip near the clasp - this is another of the diagnostics. I had remembered reading about this in die state in the last Sheridan Downey auction catalog and penciling this note into my Overton 3rd ed.: "104"b" R.7? crack through stars 8-13, die chip below clasp, star 7 crack heavy." My 4th edition Overton is in a desk drawer at work (I know, I know...). Does anybody know if this "b" state is listed in the 4th edition?

This is what happens if you look at too many busties in one day... but it's fun!

I went digging for the "citation" concerning tydye's newly realized 1818 104"b." Here's the info from Sheridan Downey's Mail Bid Mo. 33 catalog of 2007:

    168. 1818 O.104“b” R.7? XF 45. This is the undescribed terminal state of 104, with an unlisted crack thru stars 8-13, a die chip below the clasp, and the crack at star 7 as heavy and oozing as you will see on a Capped Bust Half. The consignor could track only 6 similar specimens, including the one offered in MB 31, lot 89, NGC AU 53 and Jules Reiver’s NGC VF 25.

    What fun!

drddm's 1818 dusty toning reminded me of the pincer 8's I have. This photo doesn't do justice to the toning; it looks a lot more like ddm's in hand (although not the same strike quality). I've seen others from that year with that kind of toning. Anybody know why coins from this time period ended up with the smokey, dusty patina?

Hey zap, I know exactly what you mean. I don't know why but maybe it is due to the coins age and the fact that many of the recently untouched coins sat idle for possibly over 100 years....

I like the toning on your 1807. Let's keep this thread going!

Here's an 1827 O.113a - an R.4 that jumped right out at me from a dealer's junk box. The die crack along the stars at right on the obverse was the giveaway - I like the way it stands out within the toning in such an understated, yet obvious way. Probably the cheapest bustie I've purchased so far. It's seen a long, hard life...

An 1827 O.116a (R.5) - cherried from a jewelry site on ebay (die crack from star 2 to neck)

Peaceman's 1829 posted earlier in this thread was also posted on another thread this weekend. That die crack running up through the 9 and the curls to the clasp caught my eye. It's not listed in the Overton 3rd ed.

    image

    Found it on CoinZip.

    http://coinzip.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=1829b&action=display&thread=1822

Peaceman said in the other thread that it was sold to him as an O.103 (R.1) - this coin is actually an O.102a, an R.5!

Dave Rutherford's citations on the busthalfprices.com page only lists 6 examples of this die variety having shown up in auction, all since 2006, so I would think this "a" state has been acknowledged only recently.

First there was tydyes 1818 O.104"b" (R.7) and now this one within this thread. I'm having fun. It's nice to have a bit of time, having just survived the blitz leading up to the start of academic year, I have a weekend to think about coins. It was great this thread came along.

It pays to have other eyes look over your coins!

Some of these coins are pretty rare zap.
This one is one of my rarest CBH's, the 1824/1 O-102 listed as an R5+
I have the main diagnostic circled on the reverse.
To see the rarity of this one, read what Souder says about this one in his book Bust Half Fever

Here are pics of the 1818 O.104 from Downey's MBS 33. In the final image, note the shift in the dentils. The die crack had split the die very deeply, which is why so much metal could ooze through and 'puddle' on the surface. This die state has been known to students of the series for a number of years and was written up in depth by the late Mike Marker.

Zap- good eye on catching the crack on the 29 102. I was beginning to think that no one would notice!

Here is an interesting coin I bought from an E-bay dealer a couple years ago.It is a double struck coin on both sides.I sold the coin to one of the BHNC members and have since deleted the reverse pic by mistake.Notice the doubled Liberty, stars and dentils.

Wow. I'm just blown away by some of these coins. JRocco - I've been reading about how tough that 1824 O.102 is (and looking for one like crazy - I get to few shows, so I scour the internet). One also just needs to check the T-I alignment, right? The 101 has the I to the left of the T and the 102 the I is a bit to the right.

drddm - your set over the course of this thread is just amazing. The 1817 is stunning.

Here's an 1823 O.109 I pulled off of ebay this summer. Pretty hacked up, but hey, an R.5+.

    TennesseeDave,

Was the reverse of that 1822 double struck to the same degree (as you recall)? Is it possible to have different degrees of separation on the two sides of the coin? Forgive the rookie question if the answer is obvious.

zap, the 1824 O-102 is quite a tough one. Although I don't get to many shows, I always check out the 1824's for this one. The highest graded O-102 I am aware of sold in January through heritage for over $10K....see below.
