Does anyone care that MJ is being inducted into the NBA Hall Of Fame today?

Or is His Airness no longer an interesting topic of sports conversation?

IMHO Kobe has MJ like qualities, but has not dislodged MJ off of his perch at the top of the heap of NBA greats.

Unless Kobe kick things into gear and wins another 3-4 NBA titles during the next 5-8 years, Kobe will be not be considered MJ's equal or better.

Now Lebron James is one who, being 6-7 years younger than Kobe, could outdistance Kobe in the quest to supplant MJ (does anyone have the Kobe's career stats when he was LeBron's age and LeBron's career stats; comparing same would be interesting; as would comparing same with MJ's stats when MJ had the same # of years in the league as Kobe and LeBron [MJ went to college for three years, while Kobe and LeBron went to the NBA out of highschool]).

Playing for the Wizards delayed him getting in. At least that's what I'm guessing if the NBA does the 5 year thing like the NFL and MLB.

That wouldn't even do it. He could win 50 more and still not supplant Jordan. I'm a total non-NBA fan, but MJ at least made me notice the game. Kobe just doesn't do that. That might not be the best way to measure greatness, but it does say something about Jordan's almost once-in-a-lifetime presence.

  • MJ kind of ruined the team concept in basketball.

Guys like Iverson and Kobe Bryant who followed always want to take guys on one on one instead of working as a team.

Kobe can't win without other great players, MJ couldn't win without other great players.

I never liked the way the other four Bulls players cleared the side where Jordan would get the ball and let him go
one on one against someone. I know it was an effective strategy, but it kind of killed the team basketball that I enjoyed
    growing up as a kid.

I think I can honestly say (no knock on MJ either), that MJ killed my affection for basketball. He turned the sport into
something that I really didn't like.

It is true that MJ would often go one on one [or two or three] whilst the other 4 players on The Bulls [or is it "Da Bulls"image] would clear out to give him room to operate, he still played team basketball. He was just the focus of the offense. He would drive and kick out the ball to perimeter players for jump shots that were daggers in the hearts of opponents.

Many players of today love to go one on one, but they have not developed the skill to use their individual skills to make their teammates better.

Many players of earlier years also went one on one quite a lot, including Magic, Bird, Dr. J, Paul Westphal, David Thompson, Adrian Dantley, Mark Aguirre, Bob Cousy, John Havilcheck [SP?], Tom Chambers, Tiny Archibald, Elgin Baylor, Earl the Pearl Monroe, Clyde Frasier, Bernard King, etc., etc. Some used their individual skills within a team setting, making their teams and teammates better. Some were simply ball hogs.

I also dislike basketball which is not played as a team game. One on one [or 2-5] with other players standing around waiting the for star to do something great is boring. That plus the usual nail biter of a game where the last 2-3 minutes takes 25 minutes to play due to endless timeouts and ticky tack and/or hard fouls.

Fast breaking team basketball played at a high level [i.e. the Showtime Lakers of the 1980's and the Celtics of the 50's, 60's and early 70's; plus some women's pro hoops; plus some men's and women's D-1 college hoops] is a joy to watch.

    Just my two cents.
  • MJ=the best basketball player ever. No other player had the elite level combination of offense, defense, and competitiveness as him...NOBODY. Sure, Magic and Bird were almost on par offensively, but neither were remotely close to him defensively.

By the way, that was probably the most enjoyable HOF speech I have ever watched. I won't elaborate on why...just watch it. It was fun.

  • A nice honor but the silence probably has more to do with most people not even aware that
basketball had a hall of fame or where it is even located.

I knew where it was, most people probably don't or even care. The only ones that really matter to most
    people are baseball and football.

the question is did he deserve to get it....
  • It is not the NBA HOF, it is the basketball HOF. So that includes college, overseas, etc.
