Everyone is welcome to attend these seminars and programs at the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Philadelphia Expo.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

11 a.m. . . . ”Modern Chinese Coin Counterfeit Pandemic” . . . Room 306
Dr. Gregory V. DuBay blows the lid off the hobby community’s most disturbing threat: the flood of convincing fake coins flowing out of China. See counterfeit coins and the dies used to make them, and learn how to identify a fraud before it enters your collection.

2 p.m. . . . ”Announcing the Red Book’s New Professional Edition” . . . Room 305
A new, expanded “Red Book on Steroids” is coming to the hobby. The Guide Book of United States Coins, Professional Edition, is for intermediate to advanced collectors, professional coin dealers, and investors. Find out what makes this the one reference --- after the regular-edition Red Book, of course --- that you absolutely must have in your numismatic library. It debuts in October; get a sneak peek now, ahead of the crowd!

3 p.m. . . . ”Modern Chinese Coin Counterfeit Pandemic” . . . Room 306
You’ve read about his research in Coin World and elsewhere. Reprising his 1:00 presentation, Dr. Gregory V. DuBay shines a light on the dangerously authentic-looking counterfeit coins coming from the People’s Republic of China. Marvel at the sophistication of these diabolical fake coins, and learn how to protect yourself from inadvertently buying them for your own collection.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25

9 a.m. . . . ”Society of Paper Money Collectors Moves into the Future” . . . Room 305
The organization was formed in 1961 and has over 1,750 members from around the world. Membership is open to anyone interested in paper money or related areas such as checks, stocks, engravings, and other fiscal ephemera.

11 a.m. . . . ”Modern Chinese Coin Counterfeit Pandemic” . . . Room 306
These aren’t your grandfather’s counterfeit coins --- the fakes made in China today are among the most deceptive and convincing that have ever been created. Some have even fooled the experts. Will they fool you? Dr. Gregory V. DuBay, special consultant to Coin World, shares first-hand knowledge from the spurious private mints of China, and shows you exactly what lies out there waiting for the unwary collector.

1 p.m. . . . ”Great Numismatists I’ve Met: From B. Max Mehl to Present Day” . . . Room 305
Among modern numismatists, few have reached the legendary stature of Q. David Bowers, a coin dealer, researcher, auctioneer, and award-winning author since the early 1950s. In this fascinating lecture and Q&A session, Bowers weaves tales of some of the personalities he’s met and become friends with over the years. A fireside chat with a hobby legend, telling about other hobby legends --- you’ll kick yourself if you miss this one!

2 p.m. . . . ”Abraham Lincoln: The Image of His Greatness” . . . Room 305
Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker presents a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Fred Reed’s monumental new book, Abraham Lincoln: The Image of His Greatness (winner, “2009 Book of the Year,” Numismatic Literary Guild). Marvel at how our nation’s greatest president has been portrayed in an impressive collection of coins, medals, tokens, paper currency, scrip, and other collectibles and mainstream media. Rumor has it President Abraham Lincoln himself will make an appearance --- and visitors are invited to have a free souvenir photo-portrait made with Mr. Lincoln afterwards.

3 p.m. . . . ”Modern Chinese Coin Counterfeit Pandemic” . . . Room 306
Is that an authentic Morgan dollar in that album? If you know about the rash of counterfeits coming out of China these days, you know that not only could the coin be fake, but the album itself might be, too! Dr. Gregory V. DuBay exposes the cunning artistry of the counterfeiters plaguing our hobby with their fiendishly clever wares. If you’ve ever bought a rare coin, you need to make time for this presentation.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

11 a.m. . . . ”Modern Chinese Coin Counterfeit Pandemic” . . . Room 306
Dr. Gregory DuBay has some news for you --- that Bust half dollar you have your eye on might be as phony as a crocodile’s tears. Hear about DuBay’s adventures in the People’s Republic of China, where he’s met some of the most infamous counterfeiters operating today. See examples of their handiwork, and learn how to avoid falling for their deceptive fake coins.

11 a.m. . . . ”Philadelphia: How its Citizens Proudly Promoted the WWI Liberty Loan Bond” . . . Room 305
Lawrence Schuffman will focus on the history of the World War I Liberty Loan—patriotism, American pride, and the propaganda behind the bonds.

1 p.m. . . . ”Collecting Fractional Currency” . . . Room 305

2 p.m. . . . ”History of the Red Book: 63 Years in the Hobby, and Going Strong” . . . Room 305
No other coin guide has influenced as many collectors as the Guide Book of United States Coins, known nationwide as the “Red Book.” Now, hobby legend and longtime Red Book editor Kenneth Bressett recounts the marvelous history of this #1 best-seller. Meet the hobby giants who have touched this classic over the years --- and been touched by it, in turn. Learn about fantastic error books, rare editions and one-of-a-kinds, and related collectibles. Hear about the year the Red Book beat John F. Kennedy and Dale Carnegie, why a special book was printed for Mint Director Eva Adams, how a blind collector finally got to read about his coins, and more. Bring your questions for the Q&A --- and your Red Book, for Ken to autograph.

3 p.m. . . . ”Modern Chinese Coin Counterfeit Pandemic” . . . Room 306
There are at least four levels of counterfeits being struck in China these days, from crude and obvious to incredibly detailed and convincing. Now Dr. Gregory V. DuBay shares his first-hand knowledge of the counterfeiters operating day and night in the People’s Republic, and shows you some of the fake coins they’ve made --- and even the dies they use to make them. This is a must-attend presentation for every collector, dealer, and investor.

I guess Longacre better get Consuelo some soccer shoes, as I am sure that he would not kick himself... that would be considered a menial task, to be delegated to an assistant or aide... image
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

    Dennis must have forgotten –

I’m speaking on the subject of ”Really Awful Numismatists I’ve Never Met: From Korn Mehl to Doris Day.”
However, there must be some mistake in the time and location – the draft program says I’m speaking at 8pm on Sunday, Sept 27, next to the large plastic palm in the lobby… Hmmm...must be ‘cause of the anticipated large crowd.

Wow! For sure I will hire someone to kick myself, because it is a numismatic travesty that I am not attending. image

Dentuck-- can you tell us if your staff is working on a similar type of program for the Baltimore show in the spring? The year before last, I went to a presentation about tokens that one of the dealers did in Baltimore (I cannot remember his name, but it was a great talk). We even got a free turkey sandwich (an $11.99 value, if I had to buy it myself in the lobby), as well as a free Redbook! Hopefully there will be a lot more talks at the Baltimore show.

    Longacre --

Why not take the train down for one day. Surely "The Man" could do without your instantaneous response to his shrill call for one sunrise to sunset?

I am not so sure. The Man wrote a disaster of a memo on a particular issue, then he handed it to me and said, "Longacre, put some polish on this." Needless to say, it read like Shakespeare by the time your very own Longacre was through with it. image

Then you have earned some "coin time." The train will get you to 34th street station before you've had your 2nd Martini.
