Question about Donruss border variations.

Stole these pics from a thread that TNP777 made because I'm too lazy to scan my own from my player collection. Which is the factory issue and which is the pack issue for these?:

1988 border variation

1990 border variation (different splatter pattern)

1991 border variation

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Is it just me, but how can both of those 1991 Donruss cards be 10's?? My Michael Jordan rookie is a 7 and nicer than that?? Sharper pics that is.

You have to understand PSA's strategy, which is obviously to make as little money as possible. Having 2-4 different OBVIOUS slabbed variations of 87-91 Griffey, Ryan, Thomas, Ripken, Clark, Butler, Trammell, Boggs, Hrbek, Mattingly, McGwire, Raines, etc..., would make them way too much money.

The real answer to why PSA doesn't recognize these variations is that they really don't care about post-1986 cards and don't feel like taking the time to learn about the different variations in each set.
  • Although they are variants, I don't see too many people clamoring to attain them. Unless the power of the registry comes into play. I say, to each their own!

The pack pulled card is a 10 by all standards, what you're seeing highlighted on the card is due to my scanner.

The factory card is given leniency by all grading companies. You'll see rounded corners, inner ply with rough cuts, so on, in PSA 10 slabs. I have the same in BGS 10 Pristine slabs.

border variations are boring and intentionaly overlooked . In a way in like wrapping paper, and donruss didn't care how it was wrapped and neither should we.

    !!!!!!!!

I noticed that the 1987 Donruss BACKS are flipped depending on whether they were pulled from a set or a pack. I'm assuming this holds true for other years also.

To player collectors the variations are important and I thought PSA was in the buisness to grade cards and recognize variations as they do have this thing called the set registry. I would much rather they make me chase real border variations than multiple variations of stickers cut different ways.

Seeing the '90 and '91 Donruss makes me want to throw up...those are some hideous cards. I should know - I have some at home. Not many though - even back then they had zero eye appeal.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
  • wow. donruss really made some fugly cards. Sigh. the good old days!

I like to think someone at Donruss got a new photoshop or paint program and those designs were just standard selections as I can't imagine anyone spending time actually making something that ugly.
