Ernie Harwell has cancer

Ernie Harwell, longtime radio voice of the Detroit Tigers has cancer and the prognosis does not look
good from what I am hearing. Messages of support are pouring in to him as he is much beloved by
Tigers fans. I'm choking up as I type this.

  • Our family grew up loving Harwell, back when we actually had the game on the radio at all times!

Here are two classic Harwell memories:

When a batter watched a called third strike: "He stood there like the house by the side of the road."

    and

When a foul ball went into the stands, he would say "And that was caught by a young man from Sebewaing Michigan"
    (or any other random city)

Ernie spoke at our church about 2 years ago. He gave a half hour testimony that was clear, articulate, and funny, and did it all without so much as a single note card.

He opened it by telling a story of visiting people at a retirement home (an 89 year old visiting retirees). He said he went up to a nice old lady and said to her "well hello there, do you know who I am?", to which, according to Ernie, the lady replied "I have no idea, but if you go up to that desk right there, they will tell you your name and your room number".

We've lost George Kell and the Bird already this year. It was inevitable, but I don't know if I can handle losing Ernie too.

I heard the news today about Mr. Harwell. He was the O's first announcer back in 1954 . It was very sad to hear the news .

What I REALLY liked was his outlook on the upcoming pain from the cancer. He speaks as a man of faith would speak , and can see the hope after the pain . What an incouragement to those of like mind. Instead of being hopeless , the hope shines.

What a life he has had . So many people grew up as baseball fans , the better , due to Ernie.

When he passes , many , including myself will miss him. I can't wait to see him on the other side.---- Sonny

  • Sadly, if you live long enough you will probably get some kind of cancer or disease. At 91 it is probably too dangerous/risky to do surgery or treatment, or the disease is too advanced. Better to have him feel better and manage the pain so he can enjoy the time he has left. A true class act.

i went to law school in Detroit, and saw a lot of ernie. great baseball man, if i'm not mistaken wasn't he once traded as an announcer.

    i wish him well.

i remember sitting at the lindel AC on opening day and hearing him recite poems he had written about bsaseball and broadcating on the radio before the game. class act, i got a nice auto on posters he was handing out that day.

Very sad news. Living in LA we have had Vin Scully and I know Harwell is loved the same by his fans.

My prayers to Harwell and his family.
