Is it against eBay policy to list an item in the WRONG category? If they discover it (will they?) do they charge you what the final value fee would be for the CORRECT category?

In all my years of buying on eBay (and I used to buy a LOT) I very seldom broke down my searches into categories ... I'd just search from the main search page.

Thanks.

If an item is REPORTED as being in the wrong cat,
EBAY will generally poof it. Sometimes, EBAY will
ask the seller to move it.

Thanks Storm ... do people really bother complaining that an item is in the wrong category?

    Yup.

If my competitors are gaming search by listing merch
in the wrong cats, they are going down.

Intentionally listing in the wrong cats is considered
    "search manipulation" by EBAY.

    ......

    EBAY Guidelines:

"Be sure to select a category that matches the item for sale so buyers can find your listing.
If it's in the wrong or inappropriate category, the listing may be removed to avoid confusion."
