Met former Yankee Fritz Peterson the Other Day

On Monday in Baltimore, I was pleased to meet former Yankee/Indians & Rangers pitcher Fritz Peterson at a signing prior to the Yankees/Orioles game. Peterson was at the Sports Legends Museum signing copies of his new book "Mickey Mantle is going to Heaven" and I had him sign a few other items for me as well. Most people only remember Fritz for the "family swapping" thing with Mike Kekich, I was susprised to learn that Peterson had the LOWEST career ERA at Yankee Stadium for a Yankee in its history (min. 500 innings pitched)...With all the great pitchers that pitched in the Bronx (Whitey, Gator, Page, etc.) that particular record is impressive indeed!

On the service, I found it hard to believe that he had the lowest Yankee statium lifetime ERA of 2.52 . I a quick survey and the closest Era for 500 innings was Stottlemyre at 2.67 . Sparky Lyle had a 2.31 in 331 innings at the "ZOO ".

Like Gary Bell (and a lot of other guys), Fritz gets props from me as a pal of Jim Bouton's.

That is a fabulous stat. I'll have to file it away for a time when I need a real stumper.

Reading the title, it's a good thing it was a NY ALer and not a NY NLer. I can just imagine the thread title then, "Yanked former Met Ed Kranepool the Other Day." image
  • Cool. My father in law ran into Fritz a while back and got this card signed. It's in black ink and is personalized to me with best wishes. image

  • Off topic, but I was thinking about the ol' Folly Floater being his pitch. Of course, it was Steve Hamilton, but what a pitch! I seem to remember him striking out Frank Howard with one, then later Howard hit a HR off of the Floater, and while he circled the bases, stuck out his tongue at Steve. I think some baseball program or station used it as a promo.

    Those were the days!
