Need some Rose advice..

Hi - I'm new to the boards...first post. I'd like to get some advice. I have a 1965 Rose that I recently submitted to PSA and it came back a 9 (pop 36). My Rose rookie is a 1963 Rose PSA 7 but I'd like to upgrade to an 8. I'm thinking of selling the 65 rose and using those funds to upgrade my rookie to the 8. Would you do this? Which do you think would be best to hold on to? thanks.

    First off,

    image

and Congratulations on the PSA 9 image

Now...as far as the '65 vs. the '63...I'd see if you could make a trade. If you're lucky, you might even be able to also get a PSA 8 '65. That way, you'd have both of 'em in PSA 8. image

Edited to add: Maybe a better trade would be this: Your 1963 PSA 7 and 1965 PSA 9 for the 1963, '64 and '65 in PSA 8 (if you need the '64)

    SMR's are as follows:

    1963 PSA 7 - $800 : PSA 8 $1,750
    1964 PSA 8 - $475
    1965 PSA 8 - $500 : PSA 9 $2,000

    Your two cards SMR $2,800
    Cards getting SMR $2,725

I would keep the 9 and count the "money" as paper profits.

I would sell the 7 and buy an 8, on the strength of my "paper profits."

    ........

    OR.........

I would keep the existing cards.

    .............

    OR..........

I might try to get the 7 bumped by cracking it out. (Depends what it looks like, obviously.)

I wouldn't do it. Getting rid of a great card to improve another card by 1 grade should only be done when the card you're getting rid of doesn't fit well in what you collect.

    Welcome to the Boards!

That '65 PSA 9 is a keeper! ... (only 36 or 2% made the grade out of 1620 subbed!)

A '63 PSA 8 is much easier to come by ... (282 or 26% made the grade out of 1079 subbed!)

The 63 Rose is one of the worst looking cards of all time, the 65 Rose card is the best looking of his cards (my opinion). I'd stand pat.

    welcome to the boards

some great advise from passionate collectors here ...
  • Welcome!!!

And yes, I think you'd come to regret getting rid of the '65. That's gotta be a beauty!!! The rookie is obviously nice to have, but it's just 1/4 of a "bubble head" card. Sorry if that's a horrible way to describe that card, haha.

Welcome to the boards!!!!!! It looks like you are getting excellent advice too. Even though I'm a Dodgers fan, I have great memories of watching Pete Rose play. Please share some card scans when you get a chance.

Hi and welcome to the boards, if the 63 Rose in 7 looks like it could 8 I'd send it in under the review service.

I would not crack it out, it may come back lower in grade or EOT.

As for the 65 in 9 I'm not sure what VCP is on that card but with 36 of them out there I'd venture to say that it is

worth between 400.00 and 600.00 Just a guess since I have not been into the 65 set for a few years now.

Also, all the big guns have that card in 9 so you might not be able to cash in that way.

Good luck though in whatever you choose to do.

Ouch, man. The '63 is my favorite card. I particularly enjoy Pete's neckless head. The colors are pretty awesome too. The wacky graphics and colors combine make this a one-of-a-kind card. But, hey, that's me. To each his own.

  • Guys - Thanks for all the advice...it really is tremendous help. I think for now I'm going to keep the 65 and maybe send in the 63 for a regrade. It's centered very well, maybe a chance at a 7.5.? Thanks again for all the help here...

When you say 'regrade' what exactly do you mean?
