Philadelphia Sportscard Show

I'm thinking about flying up and going to the show just to get out for a weekend. Someone give me the low down on this show. Worth the trip? (Southwest has a direct flight from Nashville to Philly for like $12.00 lol) My wife has never been to Philly, so I thought I could disguise the trip as one of those "relationship maintenance" deals and then say "Hey..look...a card show right near our hotel!! image

  • It is the best show in the Philadelphia area and atracts most of the national dealers.

This next show they have Berra, Fisk, and Bench signing. I might try to start some sort of all time great catchers piece.... just not sure what to get signed yet.

Is this the old Fort Washington show? If so I'd say it is worth going to.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • The "old" Fort Washington show is in Reading, PA now (I believe)

Went to the show in 1982, still have the ticket stub somewhere. Tried to get my dad to by a 52 mantle for $3000. No luckimage well his loss of a great investment
succesful deals :richtree, Bosox1976, Bkritz, mknez, SOM, cardcounter2, ddfamf, cougar701, mrG, Griffins : thanks All

    Go Phillies

Yeah this is the old Fort Washington show but under new ownership. They are now attracting better signers than in years past using MAB.

I also noticed they are holding a show in December as well. I wonder if the sports card world is starting to pick up again to warrant a show a quarter.

The Reading show was the "Philly Show" and has now been discontinued for the Valley Forge convention center version of the Philly Show after the ownsership changes.

When I went to the Fort Washington show I made it a point to drive into Philly for a day too.

The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall etc were cool to see. Also on Broad street their is a marker where the Baker Bowl once stood.

Penn st has a campus there as does Temple Univ. Had a great time.

    Thanks for clarifying Justin.

Reading was a PITA to get to, but King of Prussia is easier.
  • Got my invitation, hope to be there on Saturday, always seems to have many good dealers, more of a card show, in the past the signers have not been the best. Comparing it to Chantilly, Va., which seems to be a signing fest with less card dealers each show, over the past few years.

The Valley Forge (King of Prussia) version of the Willow Grove-to-Fort Washington-to-Reading Show is decent (far better than the White Plains, NY show). Different ownership since Hunt bought out Senior Hitler, and they've upgraded the signing guests. Most of the same dealers and as has already been mentioned, more of a card show. Not exactly the same as the old "Philly" shows where there was more cardboard than Chrome, but still a nice place to find some clean, raw vintage and some interesting memorabilia. PSA and SGC typically grade on site and BGS does their Raw Card Review service.
  • I talked with Steve and he is going to be there as well..

Penn St.? (channelling Thurston Howell III voice) I think you mean the University of Pennsylvania from that quaint Ivy League conference. (voice off).

I grew up in King of Prussia. Huge shopping mall (actually it is two malls next to each other), Valley Forge Park. 20 miles outside of Philly where the Turnpike splits off (76 goes in to Philly and 276 continues to NJ Turnpike). Don't buy any cards, stay at Motel 6 and take her to dinner at Le Bec Fin. Or stay at someplace decent and go into the Italian Market area for a great dinner (Ralph's - spaghetti with lump crabmeat - my all-time favorite meal - used to be at Palumbo's Nostalgia accross the street until it "burned" down ;-))
  • 35 years ago or so was a steakhouse in Media, Pa. Best and biggest slab of prime rib i ever had.
