Will this be a great buy or a great ripoff?

A few of you know that Im working on signed 1980 Baseball Immortals. There is an auction up on ebay right now for a huge lot that includes probably some of the toughest and most expensive that this set would have. None of them are authenticated. It is really tempting to bid thinking there is a possibility these could be legit...but common sense is telling me that the big guns are fake. It's possible that someone could either end up with a great deal on this lot OR they will be ripped off big time.

It's hard to say without seeing them in person but the above quote caught my attention. If they are real, it's an amazing set, and that's the beauty of bidding on it. I'd pay with a credit card through paypal if I wanted to take the risk.
  • Wow that is a neat set!! I would love to have those (if authentic).

Some of them look right; some look like possible skilled forgeries.

I think a PSA quick opinion would be possible, if the cards were
    blown up a bit.

I would ask for quick opinions on the Joe, the Mick, and the Ted.

If you bid/win, with or without a QO, pay by credit card thru PayPal.

Probably the most significant one there is the Satchel Paige. Even if "real" it could be signed by his wife. To me, it looks like a mixed bag of real and forgeries. It's that that makes me stay away from the entire lot. The Paige and Waner are probably the toughest two cards there and both are concerning to me but Im not 100% on either of them.

I just cant understand why, when you have such significant signatures that the main ones would not be authenticated and that is probably what concerns me the most. If that Paige is authentic, that one alone will be worth more than half that beginning price.

Minnasotacornhusker, I have quite a few duplicate signed cards from that set if you want to get a start on it! image

And I am currently at 50 of a possible 71 that can be signed image

If you really want the stuff, consider asking him to post a bigger
scan of the Paige - or whatever - and then request a PSA QO.

I looked a bit more and I think a bunch of the sigs are good.

I can't believe a seller of this type of auction does not have them authenticated.

    At least the biggies.

It is a crapshoot that is for sure.

50 of 71 already done? Damn Barry that is quite an accomplishment.

I think the Paige looks ok, but would quick opinion it (and the lot). The Mays looks like a common secretarial signature, and I'm not too sure about the DiMaggio.
