How's PCI at grading Jefferson nickels?

I've never purchased a PCI graded Jeff before, just a Washington quarter, which was a nice coin. What about the full steps designation? Are they usually accurate with that assessment? I'd heard ICG did a good job with attributions like that, but nothing about PCI. Thanks in advance.

Grade based on your own merits, but seems to be that most in the green holders were fairly accurate. Gold holders are a big no-no.

The only time I attempted to re-grade a PCI coin at PCGS was a gold labled coin. It was XF at PCI and PCGS called it AU.

(this was a Liberty not a Jefferson but shows the blanket statement about the gold labels is bunk)

I think PCI designates coins as Full Steps, however, what's the point?

Unfortunately, the thought process I've seemed to hear is the grading may or may not be very critical... if I'm going to spend cash to put a coin in a slab, depending on the coin, it will go to one of the top 3. If PCGS did complete attributing, instead of only coins from the CPG, they'd get alot more of my coins.

At this point, I'm buying varieties and most of them will end up at a TPG down the street in Colorado, all because PCGS won't designate.

So, the other possibility is... you've found a coin graded by PCI and wonder if the possibility exists the coin isn't designated... edited to add... unless the coin is cheap and you'd rather buy a coin instead of a lottery ticket... put the kool-aid down and buy the lottery ticket.

Unscrupulous sellers will attempt to sell a PCI Jefferson at the same level of a similar NGC/PCGS graded coin. It’s a gamble that can only be accomplished with satisfaction with the coin, in the PCI holder “in your hand”

In other words, you cannot buy with confidence with a “sight unseen” transaction.

  • Guys, I'm just wondering if anybody had experience with Jeffs graded by this company. I found one on eBay that was listed as 5 full steps and was thinking that if it does have 5 full steps, then maybe I'd buy it. It's not expensive at all, nowhere near PCGS price guide or anything, so there's not a lot of risk involved, trust me on that. But if all coins in gold-label PCI holders are dogs, or they don't property designate 5 full steps (like plenty of ANACS coins I've seen), then I'm not interested. Case closed, and no kool aid has been drunk.

the coins I have seen with 5FS has steps but a nick across a couple probably keeping them from PCGS, on the few I have seen

but you need to see the coin in hand, as pictures are usually not adequate for determing steps
  • They usually upgrade at PCGS if they're in older gold holders.

I would not trust any of the TPG's as far as the FS designations go! But if it's an old green label PCI and it is cheap enought it might be worth the chance. Back then they were about as good as the rest.

Buying coins sight unseen from any TPG is a recipe for disaster. Just look at the coins on Teletrade and tell me you would risk buying them sight unseen. All TPG's are inconsistent.
