Best offer from zero feedback eBayer: accept or reject?

Bayard1908Bayard1908 Posts: 4,084 ✭✭✭✭
I have an otherwise acceptable offer for a $500 coin on eBay; however, the bidder has zero feedback and just joined eBay 10 days ago. Would it be unreasonably dangerous to accept the offer? My main worry would be a scam such as SNAD on Paypal.

My inclination is to think that a scammer would just "Buy it Now" and not bother with an offer. The lack of feedback still concerns me though.
  • As long as he has a confirmed address and you abide by all of paypal's rules, including signature confirmation, I would do it.

Does a confirmed address even matter anymore? I thought Paypal changed the policy.

A confirmed address still shows a higher level of commitment to the process. It makes me feel a little better about a zero feedback buyer.

Everyone has to start somewhere. The concern you are feeling is normal.

This is a good time to review your selling process to close any loopholes in case there is a dispute. But I would not go further than that.
I would proceed with the transaction.
  • I am always a bit suspicious of 0 feedback users. In my opinion they should make a few small purchases to establish a bit of cred. Having said that, I would sell it to him if the offer is acceptable and take all shipping precations. My understanding is that confirmed addresses no longer matter on Paypal. Just make sure that it says that it is eligible for buyer protection. Not a bad idea either two wait an extra day or two before shipping.

Do Best Offer / Buy It Now wins show up on a user's bidding history? If so I would check to see if he is running up an unusually large amount of bids or commitments to buy. If it is a quick smash & grab account, I doubt yours will be the only auction targeted.

Accept, follow paypal's guidelines/rules if paid via that route, you should be OK.

<< <i>Do Best Offer / Buy It Now wins show up on a user's bidding history? >>

Yes, they do, and they show up slightly differently from regular wins (unbolded, I think), so you can tell them apart if you need to.

For me, the issue is less the protection, and more the annoyance. Even if PayPal will refund your money, is it worth the hassle for you? You mention that the offer is otherwise acceptable. If you rejected this offer, would you be able to find another buyer next week, or would you be stuck with it for the next year? Do you have $400 into the item and are making a profit, or are you already annoyed that you're taking a loss?

If you're at all reluctant now, and something goes wrong later, you're just going to be more annoyed.

FWIW, those comments aren't restricted to zero-feedback bidders. I would feel the same thing about a 1000-feedback bidder who was outside the US. I'll ship internationally, but it's annoying. If I have to do something annoying to start with, another annoying thing doesn't make me any happier...

I think the eBayer must read this board because I received an identical offer from a high feedback account (same zipcode) shortly after creating this thread. If so, please PM me.

try getting contact info from both and see if they are the same or similar enough.

I would do it. if by zero you do not mean (+1 and a -1, etc.) but no feedback yet.... that is how everyone starts....

  • The last two zeros (Zero FB Buyers) I had sales to on the Bay did not pay. Would have loved to neg them but did follow thru the process so they got an unpaid item strike. Its your call, but I dread these people, especially if its a big ticket item.

Whatever you do, do not interrupt an auction of yours before it has closed to take their offer as they may not pay or try to talk you down further. Don't wast your time with low FB buyers (usually single digits) who want to haggle either. If they have any money, then why such low FB activity?
