Not the best pics .. but you get the idea.

Is that dirt and gunk in the lettering on the reverse? Was this buried at one time?

The details look good... I'm guesing AU 50 -
Would a little acetone take off some crud and keep the overall look?

I would not mess with the "crud," personally. I grade it XF45. This is a very tough date to locate in that grade, and if it doesn't slab due to some loose dirt adhering, then an "album collector" will gladly give it a home.

XF gradewise. Coin looks like it has been in a leather wallet for a while.

    XF but ugly toning.

    A very crusty 45.

As LanLord said....... Time spent time in a leather wallet could answer some of the issues.

With no separation showing in the laurel wreath leaves, and the gash on Liberty's jaw, I would limit the grade to VF-30

acetone and a little agitation would remove the loose gunk without affecting the toning.

I think that if you sent it in to PCGS it would come back as genuine.

35, some rusty die evidence on the rev in the lettering, toning not too attractive.

That coin is a 40 all day long, maybe 45 on a good day at PCGS. Looks original, I like it!

XF40 -details. Hard to tell from the photos but it looks cleaned and retoned or altered surfaces.
