"Penlight" Coin Photography Method?

I've seen some coin photos on e-bay, mostly very colorful toners, that appear to have had some sort of high-powered pen-light as the lighting source. Typically, the background is dark (almost as if the lights are out) and the photographer is holding the coin and shining the beam on the slab near the toned area. The photos are actually quite nice with the toning prominently displayed.
Does anybody know what I am talking about or familiar with this photographic "method".
