Do rim dings bother you?

tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
Why are rim dings frowned upon so much but yet lightly cleaned and re-toned coins found acceptable and even desirable if colorful. Rim dings are a natural part of the coins history as coinage. Cleaned coins are a consequence of a bad care taker. I have some rim dinged coins in my collection - yes I would prefer one without the ding. But most of the time I would take an original rim dinged coin over a cleaned un-dinged one. But thats just me - I seem to be in the minority.

I think it all depends on the coin series you are talking about. There are several series that it almost impossible to come by coins without rim dings.

Yes, they bother me, though it seems pretty clear that rim dings have become far more accepted in this era of coin slabbing (since in many cases they cannot be seen in the holders).

As for a hierarchy of which defects are least desirable (cleaning vs rim dings vs a scratch vs a spot, etc.), different people will have a different ranking for each. In my case, I'd rank cleaning near the worst of the list, rim dings somewhere in the middle.

Sometimes, a cleaned coin can retone with time and look good whereas rim bumps, like diamonds, are forever.

Here is a rim ding on a beautiful well struck 1808 of mine, does it kill the coin for you?

Yeah actually. While it is a beautiful coin, it's worth maybe half of a non-damaged piece to me.

Half? How much would a undinged dipped out white one be worth to you

The rim ding on the 08 is on the larger side. But I would still take this one over a dipped white one

I wouldn't buy either one. I'm sure the rim damage isn't such a big deal to some, especially on a nice original piece, but I wouldn't even bother inquiring about that coin. That's just my feelings on rim bumps.

The 1808 happens to be in a PCGS AU53 holder.

Do you think it is acurrately graded, even though it has the rim ding?

I am one of those that is really bothered by rim dings.
I find them hard to overlook. Believe me I have tried.

On circ bust coinage it didn't bother me much years ago if it had nice original surfaces. They do bother me more now and I usually pass if I see it. That 1808 posted looks like a decent coin, but especially up in the AU condition, it would not be a coin I would purchase.

I'm okay with rim dings. And my preferred series is Buffalo Nickels. I have to admit however that rim dings are generally not common with Cu-Ni coinage.
