Probably a high VF or low XF coin that would be netted to lower VF with the hits. Those aren't particulary bad hits for such a coin. And it's what you would often see on a coin in this grade range. If the coin has signs of abusive cleaning it could fall to below VF. But such a coin in 90% of the B&M's across the country would be offered retail for strong VF or even XF money. I always find it sort of odd that no matter how cleaned or nicked up a VF-XF barber is the typical B&M shop will not net grade for damage. Probably because so few come with that kind of detail unless they are unc or scrubbed AU's.

I'd grade the 1906-D an XF 40. The hits are not bad enough [ IMHO ] to lower it to a VF.

  • that seems to grade xf40, but not an attractive one with the hits and dipped out look, unless that's your thing!

Hmmmmm? not my series, but my grade was more like VF20, I just don't see that as an EF coin.

XF40, but dipped and unappealing as a result.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • VF35; the hits do not hurt the coin so as to net it down since these hits i expect for a coin of this grade.

This was my assessment as well.

  • Details grade - I would call it VF30. I can't get close to XF on this coin. With the dipping, I would be selling it as simply VF. The better detail is offset by the lack of originalty. The hits really do not trouble me at all.

  • Bottom band is incomplete but close -- VF30/35. Obvious cleaning.

As for the technical grade VF30 or possibly a 35. If it were original and not cleaned/dipped I would tend to net it at a 30 with the marks.

Since it has been cleaned for market value it really falls unfortunately to somewhere around F15 - VF20 and no higher.

The TPG's would most likely not grade the coin with the hits above VF on this coin and it would come back in a Genuine PCGS or net grade now in the case of NGC.

Surface scratches and hits tend to be allowed for VF20 and below but this coin would not get graded right off the bat due to the dipping/cleaning to begin with. Still you have pretty decent detail and as long as you paid VF or back for it when you got it you did ok if you can live with the marks and cleaning issue.

  • VF35. I've never seen a coin "Net Graded" because of hits. they're part of the technical grade.

    35 sounds about right.

    Nice coin.

  • Vf38. Amazing how many folks have the uncanny ability to tell if a coin has been cleaned by looking at a picture. I think it may have been dipped, but good possibility it is wholly original. I'd have to see it in hand.

    Just for comparison,

Here is a Barber Dime that is graded EF45. Notice some luster still remains and the bottom band of the headband is complete and well defined.
