(: Testing PNG Graphics Format... can you see this image? :)

Can you see the image below? Testing the PNG format for an updated web site that I am creating...
the PNG format is great because it allows transparent backgrounds...
but before I go too far I wanted to see how widely supported the format is.

I did all my graphics for my site in png files and they seem to work fine
with a transparent background. So does gif.
Resizing the image to fit the placed image size looks like it eliminated the pixelation problem

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
<< <i>thanks everybody so far... glad to hear it's working... format is so cool.. only real drawback i can see is that the images are a bit heavy on the file size as i can't find any compression settings... but for my use hey that's ok.

Loving the transparent background.

if you use photoshop put your coins on a separate layer... turn off the background layer.... save as PNG 24-bit... that's it... you now have a high quality file with a transparent background.
(reminder, only real drawback is the files are uncompressed... ie larger).
if you want to get real fancy try adding more layers with your text, etc and you can have all over a transparent background too.

You sure that's not the color of the background of the post?

<< <i>The coin generally looks fine, but if you were shooting for a truly transparnet background for all users then it failed on this end as the background is a light blue. Additionally, at 9:00 on the reverse there is a problem with the image. >>
I would guess the problem with the image is a slab gasket.

It is not the color of my generic background. My background color is a light grey-blue mix and the coin is clearly formatted against a light green-blue background. Additionally, the image problem is not with the coin's gasket, but rather with part of the image at 9:00 on the reverse missing as well as a similar problem at 6:00 that I did not mention in the previous post.

<< <i>I thought that PNG was kinda like PSD (Photoshop TIFF). The filesize isn't too bad considering that - about 4-5x that of a good JPG. >>
actually... another good point... a cool feature is that the PNG format also supports layers (like PSD or TIFF)... so if you had you coin image with say a text layer... it would display on the web as well as be editable later on.

Some browsers are buggy.
<< <i>I tried saving your file as a GIF. You get the same quality image and transparent backgrounds, but the file is less than half the size of the PNG.

problem with GIF though is you are limited to 256 Colors instead of Millions you get with PNG.

.PNG supports 16 bits of color information per pixel. .PNG supports a form of compression that is not lossy. Seems to be slightly better than .TIF for this purpose.
I still strive to use JPEG only for publishing because you can fine tune the compression so much better with JPEG.

reason why i am using PNG for my updated web site is because I wanted to have a way of doing the coin images only once and then change my backgrounds, etc whenever i want by replacing 1 file instead of redoing all the coin images every time i want a change.

Ah yes, I forgot about that 256 color limitation and take back what I said about "the same quality image".
