What is the spread between warm and cool? Are you speaking a suttle little difference?

  • Was already working on a VG+ Barber Half set, so, cool is OK by me. Let it heat up after I'm done.

I don't pay attention to "What's hot and what's not"- I buy coins for my collection when I feel like it. Whether or not other people are buying (or not) the same series is irrelevant.

Think of water. Nothing is really red hot nuclear nor is it freezing cold.

Warm means there is some modest activity in the series.

Cool means there is less then usuall activity.

Probably not a heck of a big difference between the two.

I haven't been in the mood to buy much of anything recently but when I do buy I buy what I like, without taking the items temperature. If I were to base my purchases on whether or not other spenders were spending the same way it would all be too much of a sheep like thing for me.

The Seated Liberty Quarters have been strong, with an upward price trend.
I wonder what they would have done if there had not been a problem with the economy.

How would "warm" and "cool" series be determined? Is it based on how well a particular series sold at the last show? Or last auction? And, if so, is every show and auction the same? Or could a series be "warm" in Long Beach and "cool" in Virginia on the same weekend? And is it realistic to think that all the coins within one series would perform consistently? Or isn't it more likely that some coins in a "cool" series might still be "warm"? Or "hot" even?

But even if we get passed all that, wouldn't a series only be considered "warm" or "cool" until the next show or auction, at which time it would be re-evaluated? Which is to say that even if this were true, and you were trying to act on this information, it might not be valid the next time you went to buy?

I haven't been following prices much lately, but I just glanced at the PCGS Price Guide and all of the things considered "cool" are still going for moon money compared to what they were six years ago. What criteria is used to determine what is warm and what is cool?
  • BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Cool, does not mean that prices have dropped to where they should be,

It means that interest appears to be lagging and we can expect more

price adjustments in the next few weeks.

My last 2 coins purchased at the start of the month were a proof Barber half and a proof Seated half. I have bought about 10 walkers this month along with a few bags of lincoln cents. I wish they were a little more dead price wise.

Looking at capped bust halves for september

Over the last few months, I have looked at over 100 AU-58

CB Halves and passed on all of them. The cream puffs are still

getting premo money and due to their rarity, are probably worth

it to collectors who appreciate rare beauty.
