Please Help - A coin from 1774

I am hoping someone can help me. My friend had a coin when he was younger that he has been trying to track down or find information about. The coin was dated 1774 and had a Star on One Side and a Bear on the other side. It also said E PLURIBUS UNIM. He thinks it was the size of a Quarter.

If I recall correctly, E PLURIBUS UNUM was first used on NJ post-colonial issues of 1786 so I would expect that this is either a fantasy piece or might be from another country.

    No.
I am afraid that your friend's memory is faulty. Over the years I have had many, many people tell me that they remeber coins they once had that never existed as they remember them.

Since you say it was dated 1774, America or the United States did not start minting it's own coins until 1793, hence the comment that it might be from another country.
