    No doubt someone will make me eat crow on this, but I'm not certain the coin is bad. Of course, it has been cleaned without doubt. The placement of the mintmark appears approximately correct for the 1892-1897 issues and the rectangular or boxy aspect of the S mintmark on this piece is similar to what was used from 1892-1897.

    I don't see the obvious such a bad fake signs either

    a little damage on R of quarter on reverse

    probably cleaned in past

    I see it as genuine, although cleaned to death, but definitley looks genuine from the photo

    At least I am not the only one who will be eating it. I thought it was real also. Lets see what happens. I wonder who won it?

    I think it is real, and harshly cleaned... [but the s mint mark is in the wrong place. Probably an 1897 P with an added mintmark. ]

    EDITED: I was wrong. The MM placement is correct. Probably is a 97-S but looks like it was scubbed with baking soda...
