1880-O Morgan (micro o)?????

I got this 1880-O Morgan at an auction last night (hopefully cheap). Is it the elusive micro o? Would you care to offer an opinion grading on grade?

Thanks in advance,
Jim O'C.

Assuming it doesn't say "Made in China" that looks like a nice, solid coin.

As for the Micro "O"...I don't have my reference guide handy...sorry.

The 1880-O micro is a very common coin.....The 1896, 1900, 1902 & the super rare 1901's O micros are much more desirable to collectors.

Below are some 1880-O micro Vams that are collectible, such as:

    VAM-1A Hangnail reverse
    VAM-4 Crossbar with Micro O
VAM-6 8/7 Ear top outside left of 8
VAM-6A 8/7 Ear top outside left of 8, die gouge left wreath
VAM-6C 8/7 Ear top outside left of 8, die gouge left wreath
VAM-6B 8/7 Ear with Hangnail reverse

See vamworld.com for pictures of the above...good luck

To add....you do not have any hangnail varieties, from what i see in your pictur. Nor do I see any Die Gouge wreaths....although the 'cross bar' and '8/7's are a possibility.

Small and regular O mint marks were both used in 1880. A reverse with the small one is thought to perhaps have been the host coin for the micro-O counterfeits that were made with 1896, 1900, 1901 and 1902 dates.

Coin looks awfully nice in the photos, which is an immediate cause for suspicion because of how violently the values change in higher mint state grades. Is it an extremely rare MS65 that Greysheets for $25,000, or a common MS63 that lists for $300? Or is it a worked-on AU58 that's worth maybe 30 bucks?

Best of luck on this one.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Thank you all. I am going to submit, and I will let you know the results. My Guess MS-64. But what the hell do I know; I am just a dumb surveyor.

Based on your images, I am going to say the coin has altered surfaces. Could just be the pictures though.

Visually odd looking for the reason that there are numerous dark recesses in the obverse denticles, as in crud or toning, yet the fields and portrait are bright with no obvious evidence of circulation. In the holder as imaged, it looks like a dealer's stale stock that was being laid off at a "country" auction.

It looks like crud; the same crud on the reverse on and near the M in America.

When you take it out of the plastic, does it display a wonderful, rotating cartwheel?
    It should.
I think I'm in the genuine, cleaned(overdipped) crowd.

If you mean does the light relect like a spinning hub cap, the answer is yes.
