summer of success - hot cards

After what is being dubbed "the Summer of Soccer" ... several players have emerged as hot commodities.

One of these is Columbus Crews' giant defender - Chad Marchall. After leading his club to the MLS Championship last season, he represented the USA in the Gold Cup.

Now this Upper Deck card went for a measley $105.89 on ebay(Item number: 360179509884 ). If he plays in the World Cup next year, it will surely be a steal. (since only 25 of these exist.)

I'm not a big fan of what Upper Deck has done for MLS, but this is a great looking card - I wish I had won it.

  • I have absolutely no idea who that guy is, but other than the sticker auto, the card looks great. Maybe if UD would have put out the same quality cards for baseball, MLB wouldn't have given them the boot.

Agreed. It's sad when their only decently designed products are direct ripoffs of Topps: OPC, Timeline, Goudey, Goodwin Champions, etc.

Speaking of hot cards (as well as cards that most collectors here don't care about), the new Topps basketball is out. And the handfull of Ebay auctions I've seen so far have been getting A LOT of action.

    Chopper,

There is an American League - more correctly - a North American League (includes Toronto FC, and will add Vancouver in 2011) - called Major League Soccer -AKA- MLS.

While Europe is still king in the sport - just as the NHL is still the top league for hockey, MLS is producing some good young players.

The goal for many of these American kids is to make a club in the MLS - then display their talent and get to Europe for big money. (The same goal for any soccer player from Argentina to Zimbabwe.)

Two such American players are making it big in England's Premier League:

Clint Dempsey - went from playing with New England Revolution to starring with Fulham United in London.
Jozy Altidore - only 17 when he started for New York Red Bull - just went to Hull City (Tigers) and is posed for a permanant move for $11 million. He scored in his 1st full game.

Other former MLS players in the Premier League:
Brad Friedel - Columbus Crew - now with Aston Villa
Tim Howard - New York Red Bull - now with Everton
Marcus Hahnemann - Colorado Rapids - now with Wolverhampton
Brad Guzan - Chivas USA - now with Aston Villa
Eddie Johnson - FC Dallas - now with Fulham United

We also have players in the top leagues in Italy, Germany, France and Scotland.

Aren't you glad you asked ?

    cheers

  • TheHun, not to take this completely off topic, but I would really be interested in seeing more of your soccer autos. What kind of cards are these and where do you get them.

Why is this the summer of soccer?

okposo - I will try to upload a few more samples of what is available in the soccer card world - since so many countries produce cards, it is sometimes hard to keep up. The cardsi in my sig line are TOPPS.

Vito - Chelsea are off to a banging start ...

markj111 - this was dubbed the "summer of soccer" because there were an unbelievable number of games ...

The US Natiuonal Team played in back to back tournaments in South Afric (Confederations Cup) and then defended their Gold Cup here in 16 American cities.

While MLS was playing itts regular season - European clubs were in pre-season and visits by some of the best occured in 11 cities - AC Milan, Inter Milan (both Italy), Chelsea (England) and Club America (Mexico)

The MLS All-Star game was played against visiting Everton (England).

The two riches clubs in the world - Real Madrid and Barcelona (both Spain) played against MLS clubs - drawing 93,000 against Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rose Bowl and 67,000 against Seattle Sounders. Fact - Barcelona purchased several players in the off season - 3 of them alone cost over $235 million !

This does not include the other clubs that came and played matches in the regional Concacaf Champions League - which included 6 MLS clubs and the U.S. Open Cup tournament and the U.S. Team world Cup Qualifiers for next year's World Cup.

So ... there were approximately 226 games in 80 days of summer - my TV almost burned out.

    cheers
