New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Here ya go Cap'n.
As Jason said in the other thread, the one variety of the 1866-S has a very weak mintmark.

I found the previous thread very informative, and was sorry to see it go poof.

I read that thread as well and agree it was informative...once the info came out rather than the mystery
Wonder why it poofed unless I missed it turning into a "PCGS made a big mistake" type of thing (not that the fine folks on these forums would likely do that
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

So ultimately, all known varieties of 1866-S can be distinguished from 1866-P by the obverse, either the slanted date or the die crack as shown above. If you have a level date and no die crack, you probably do have a '66-P.
1866 P >>> notice how much closer the 1 in the date is to the denticles than the last 6 in the date also notice on ziggy's coin the date is level but the 1 in the date is centered almost perfectly over a denticle. compare that to the 1 on my coin
