Anybody got a good picture of an 1866-P dime?

Hey you, put down that gasoline! image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Ignoring some of the intrigue and innuendo, I thought the previous thread was very interesting and as I posted in that thread, I'd like to see some photos of the 66 P dime mint marks myself. --Jerry

    1866

    1866-S

    Here ya go Cap'n.
As Jason said in the other thread, the one variety of the 1866-S has a very weak mintmark.

Very definite difference in the slanting of the dates. Very useful.

I read that thread as well and agree it was informative...once the info came out rather than the mystery image
Wonder why it poofed unless I missed it turning into a "PCGS made a big mistake" type of thing (not that the fine folks on these forums would likely do that image )

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Thanks. We have now been trained to recognize yours as a P rather than a weak S. --Jerry

I have been telling myself for years this is a P. So, now, I have an S in my set instead. A tough one to replace. Are there others that are this deceptive to most collectors?

By the way, not ALL 1866-S dimes have a date that slopes down. However, the variety that does not have a downsloping date has a rather prominent die crack through Liberty's lower leg. Here's mine:

    imageimage

So ultimately, all known varieties of 1866-S can be distinguished from 1866-P by the obverse, either the slanted date or the die crack as shown above. If you have a level date and no die crack, you probably do have a '66-P.

1866 P >>> notice how much closer the 1 in the date is to the denticles than the last 6 in the date also notice on ziggy's coin the date is level but the 1 in the date is centered almost perfectly over a denticle. compare that to the 1 on my coin
