Donruss/Leaf mislabels?

I found this interesting and may only be interesting to me.

I sub a few cards with every order for past buyers that are members of the PSA registry but do not sub cards to PSA. One of which is an avid Dale Murphy collector. One card I have subbed twice, was a 1987 Leaf Dale Murphy DK. The first one I subbed was a 10 and would have been a pop 1 but was labeled as Donruss. Sent back to PSA for correction. Sold it to another Murphy collector. The guy I subbed it for already has one but it is also labeled as Donruss. He doesn't seem to care about the mislabel.

Now, I subbed another one in July and it was also a 10. It was also labeled as Donruss. So technically the card should be a pop 3 but is a pop 1 according to the current pop report. By chance, I subbed a Donruss one in Craig's 1st group sub with some Leaf cards and it was mislabeled as Leaf. It was also sent back for correction.

That means the Donruss pop report should only have 5 instead of 7 if you assume the pop report was adjusted when my first one was corrected.

How many times does this happen? How many errors are out there that have gone unnoticed? Means nothing as far as the 87 Donruss or Leaf sets are concerned since there is no competition on the registry for these sets. However, it would matter for the player set builders.

Just for reference:

I should go check my Donruss and Leaf Ripkens. Thanks for the heads up!

Seems to be a lot of errors lately. Just from looking at Ripken's in the last 2 weeks I found a 1998 Skybox Dugout Axcess that was labeled as a Inside Axcess parallel when it wasn't, and 2 1997 Donruss Team Sets that were labeled as Pennant Edition parallels when they weren't. All were from the same seller.

That's happened to me a lot with the 85 Leaf Diamond Kings too. I can understand the grader's confusion though because the back of the card still says Donruss. The only way you would know it is Leaf is by reading the bio and noticing that the bottom paragraph is in French . . . or by looking at the submission form and seeing that the submitter indicated it was a Leaf. image

Sorry, the scan might be hard to read, but I think you can still make out the "Donruss" on the bottom and the French in the paragraph.

Then the pop report is really screwed up. I sold mine for $75 about 3 months ago but the pop report still says there is only 1.

These types of errors are definitely out there if you look for them. With all of the modern parallel issues, quite a few can get overlooked quite easily. In addition to just regular versions of cards, there can be silver, gold, refractor, xfractor, blue refractor, white refractor, orange refractor, jersey, patch, auto, game used jockstrap cards, etc. available and I think these are the ones that easily slip past PSA.

I've had to send back at least a dozen mechanical errors in the last 6 months that were very similar to the examples you provided. Most had some variation that could be easily overlooked. A few however, were way off.
