Seriously, does anyone collect Chuck E. Cheese Tokens?

So I was at Chuck E. Cheese today for a birthday party my daughter was invited to, and I had a cup full of tokens sitting in front of me. Being the coin geek that I am I started to look through them. Ya know, sorting out different dates and such. I found a very worn 1983 token and that sparked my interest.

Does anyone here collect these things?

Back when my nephew was 5 I gave him a bag full of foreign coins and a few tokens. He quickly looked through the coins but stopped when he found a Chuck-E-Cheese token. You could see he felt it had real value, unlike the other things he had just looked through.

Does anyone collect them? Someone must, but I don't know who that might be.

I collect most anything and everything thats made of metal and which has a date.
And yes, I have some Chucky Cheese Tokens along with some golf ball dispenser tokens and gaming tokens. I do not actively seek these out but will stick the better quality ones in my pocket for the collection.

I knew that.

I collect all sorts of amusement tokens and videoarcade tokens dating
back to the last century. My collection of Chuck-e-cheese is relatively
deficient since there are likely hundreds of them but I've got about 20
different. There's not a lot of rush on tokens and medals made in the
last twenty years since there are very few collectors relative the supply.
I can wait until these find me... ...I think.

A lot of the modern medals aren't getting saved well and some have
very poor distribution. You might not want to wait with them.

When I'm there with my daughter I always look through them for errors lol. I have saved one from her Birthyear and 2 older ones I found . You get like 6 for $1 so I don't feel so bad.

I ended up with about 20 or so that were mixed in with world coins several months ago. I saw that ebay actually had a catagory for them. I listed them. I got at least a half dozen inquiries about condition/dates/city etc. It cracked me up. Do not scoff the Chuck E. Cheese collectors! I think I sold them for $15

Were they all made at the same place ?

What's the difference between collecting clad coinage and CEC tokens?

I have several off center ones that I bought from a boardmember several years ago. But...I do not collect them. Those were "special."

Funny you should ask. One winter day about 5 years ago, I took, my son to Chuck-E-Cheese to play some games. I bought $20 worth of tokens and, as I sat in the booth, I would give my son 5 to 10 tokens at a time. Otherwise he would forget his cup of tokens at one of the games. Anyway, to pass the time, I started looking at the tokens. I was actually able to build a nearly complete date set, which I was later able to complete fully. I even had a transitiional year, where two tokens of the same date were struck from the same dies, but on different planchets. It was done as a joke--kind of-- but it was fun. I still have the collection somewhere at home.

I hate to admit this but I am in a race with another collector to see who can complete the set.

There are a ton of these and the one you all can help me with is ....

Santa Ana store....Anna is incorrect on the token and the location store lease fell apart so the store didn't materialize but the incorectly speeled tokan did.

Then I grew up and thought how disgusting it was for humans to go into places like that.. But again the tokens were cool..

In My day I got one with Vanessa Delrio smiling and saying don't you wish.. with a lollypop.. SEKA.. Another one with Tracy Lords..

But again, I grew up.. After 20 or so years and reading this thread I took them out of my safe and they are UNC MINT never used.. I wonder how much my Tracy Lords tokens are worth.. If this thread is not welcome.. Moderators poof it.. I don't mean nothing dirty by it.

I have a few that I would grade as MS 63-64. Right now
I have them wrapped in Taco Bell napkins to see what
kind of toning they will develope. Last year I found a 1983
that was a rich glossy brown, probably a VF-XF.

Few token collectors care much about grades.

For proper toning they might need to be pressed between two pieces of pepperoni.

I'm sure you can't be serious. Clads coins are actual coins minted by
the government of the largest economy in the world. They have cir-
culated freely for nearly 44 years now and are collected by tens of
millions. They have been made in staggering quantities and can be
found nearly everywhere and have been used as money by nearly
half a billion people and 400,000,000 still living. The oldest examples
have been spent thousands of times for everything from soup to nuts.
Collecting them requires various ways of looking dependent on one's
objective but can be found everywhere from one's pocket to encapsu-
lated by third party graders.

Chuck-e-cheese tokens were made only in the millions with some var-
ieties and types with mintages as low as 1000. These don't circulate
at all but most examples tend to bounce back and forth at various local
establishments. Collecting them requires wholly different strategies
than collecting clad coins but is still dependent on your objectives. Most
of these are acquired by collectors who trade with other collectors and
are brought into this process when establishments close and a collector
is able to obtain the obsolete tokens or are left with B&M dealers by the
public when accumulations and collections are sold. These usually have
so low a value that they aren't advertised for sale individually or even
specifically. That is they'll be in a lot of "5 pounds of mixed tokens". No
one offers or buys "5 pounds of collectible clads".

Also the tokens are good brass while the clads are just crap that will some-
day make great chill scrap for the production of stainless steel.

The nearest Chuck E Cheese to here is about 25 miles away, which is a good thing. There have been numerous shootings in that area, including in the restaurant itself.

You need to clean them at least twice with acetone.
