Which would be the better investment 80-81 Basketball or 75 Mini box?

I am thinking about purchasing one of these boxes and I cannot decide which would be the better investment. I am leaning towards the basketball because of the bird and magic rookie. After looking at Felicia's boxes I want to make a purchase.

    Definitely the 80-81 Basketball

  • I would go with the 1980-81 Topps Basketball box any day of the week, its a very unique set...

With the recent flood of 75 mini's to hit the market, I'd say the 80-81 basketball is a better investment.

I'm going against the grain here, but I would say that the 75 mini box will offer the most upside if you are strictly looking for "investment". I believe that due to the recent "hoard" that was sold, that now or over the next year is a great time to buy those boxes at "depressed" prices. Once that dries up, I fully believe the price will begin to rise again at a higher appreciation rate then the 80-81 basketball boxes. Even though the basketball contains Magic/Bird, I don't ever see those boxes gaining the type of popularity that the 86 Fleer boxes with Jordan enjoyed and which caused their price to rapidly appreciate. Additionally, I don't believe the prospective buying audience will be as large in the future with basketball as compared to baseball. Plus, while the 80/81 only contains one real key card, the 75 is loaded with rookies, and popular cards of veterans alike.

Those are both nice boxes that would be neat to own so I wish you the best in whatever decision you make on it. Just my two cents,

I would consider neither a good investment. 80/81 has gotten to a point where only one card has value, and that card is virtually impossible to pull out centered without print defects. This does not bode well for the product. There are probably more 75 mini boxes out there than any Topps wax box of the 70s, including 78 and 79.

If you had your heart set on a wax box, my choices in the $1200-$1500 price range would be a 74-75 or 75-76 basketball wax box (although no Herculian hits, they are extremely hard to come by which means they will always be in demand), a 1976 Topps FB wax box, a 1991 Topps Desert Shield baseball wax box (if you can find one), or a 1985-86 OPC Hockey box.

What do the Desert Shield boxes look like? Are they like normal 1991 Topps boxes with a Desert Shield logo? Anyone have a pic?

Basketball without question, and aren't they a lot cheaper too?

They look exactly like 1991 Topps boxes, so you need to buy from a reputable dealer who has opened some from the group. Tough to find in box form but I think that set will always be in demand with set collectors, player collectors, insert collectors and war vets.
  • The 75 Topps Mini is a better investment for the facts noted above. The 75 set has 3 HOF rookie cards and a plethora of HOF stars. Lastly, it would be almost impossible to find a 1991 Topps Desert Shield Wax box unless you can pick it up from the Topps Vault (One sold this last year for $1800). It would be nice if there was a "find" of those though.
  • I'd go with the mini's... baseball will always have the bigger following.

    Only from my experience

    I would say 80/81 basketball

    I got 3 bird/magic's in a box, well worth the $$

Not sure what the price is between the two, but I like the 80/81 set.

In my opinion, the 80/81 set is undervalued - I recently sold off my #5 registry set - it is tough to find in high grade.
