77,78,79 Topps FB Wax Box vs Cello Box ???

Hi All

Im looking at maybe making a purchase from Steve Hart(BBCE)

My question is Wax box vs Cello box vs Vending box

What is the card ct on these items?

Wax Box 36 packs x 12 cards per pack?

Cello Box 24 packs x ?? cards per pack?

Anybody have any experience or insight as to which type of product yields the higest quality cards?

Im looking at 1977, 78, 79 Topps Football.

Thanks
John

  • The answer is always wax over cello. The year and sport do not matter.
  • I often wonder about this as well. Thanks for opening up the topic.

    I agree. Avoid cello.
Too tightly wrapped, many ruined corners
Also the gum was often placed in the middle, ruining two cards and causing the others to warp

I prefer vending because you get more cards for the $ especially if you're set building

For submissions, racks are best but most expensive
  • I agree with Hammered that the cello packs are so tight, that the cards will have corner issues with some of them. I have a new order in with BBCE for single packs, and this will be my first to see how it turns out. Not sure myself how many cards come in the single packs. The 78s and 79s are nice.

I don't care much for vending unless I am buying a sealed case. Too many dinged corners. If you are looking for cards just to grade and sale, I always prefer wax over anything else. Unless again, I am buying a whole case or a full box that I know BBCE is pulling from a case. Then I would prefer rack packs.
  • I am sorry but I disagree with most of you ..

The 82-86 football cellos ARE NOT wrapped tight at all...

The wax packs are a mess for those years

Stay away from wax packs in the mid 80's material when it comes to fb...go with cello and racks..wax is dead last...

I opened 78 cello fb and they yielded the most gradeable cards with wax second.

When I have more time I will be more than happy to put out a list of unopended stuff from 70-87 wax vs rack vs cello. for BB and FB.

The Link below will take you to the PSA Boards 1952 Set Build, I also have made 5 slideshows each slideshow is 100 cards long, card numbers 1-99,100-199,200-299,300-399, and 400-407
Link To Scanned 1952 Topps Cards Set is now 90% Complete Plus Slideshows of the 52 Set

I agree with the 80's fb. Most cellos are brutal from the 70's. 76 fb cellos are the worst. Those things have a death grip on the corners. I would guess that at least 50% of the cards have corner damage from being wrapped so tight. That is just from the experience I have had with the few 70's cellos that I have opened.

I agree with Bill that if you know the box is fresh then racks are the way to go. The problem that you can face from 70's and 80's wax is that depending on how it has been stored the gum can cause some serious damage if it was stored in a hot or damp environment.

Wasn't there a group rip on here about 6 months ago with '78 football vending? If I remember correct, the results were brutal.
Currently working on: Kurt Warner PSA 9 or 10

I have to disagree with that too.

I have busted more than my fair share of wax and cello packs for the 79s and 80s of baseball and football and do not remember ever getting one PSA 10 from any cello pack with the exception of 83 Topps baseball from a sealed case that Steve busted.

Always had my best results from properly stored wax with racks being the second best.

Vending is just as I said. If it is a full case or came from a full case, results are usually pretty good. Like daddymc said, there was a group rip of 78 Topps football that was horrific. The 82 Topps vending we did this week had half the box that was ruined due to dinged corners.
  • Hey Guys

Thanks for all the great input.

My goal is to obtain nice center cards NM-M or better for my raw sets. Trying to sub for the over hype 10 grade
is not an issue. Although subbing nicer doubles to help recoup some cost is possible.

While I need a few of the stars from the 77,78,79 FB sets, most of the cards that I have been upgrading in my sets
are commons and semi-stars. I can't really justify spending the money on unopened wax, etc looking to just upgrade
commons and semis, But Ive grown fustrated getting card lots that claim NM-M or better only to be disappointed by the usual
ebay miscuts and overgrades. Maybe its me but Im always on the look out for PERFECT CENTERING 1st and foremost. Naturally the card has to be fresh and free of flaws. I know unopened wax,etc will yield a high % of oc's, miscuts etc... so it looks like I will continue my quest for the PERFECT RAW SETS one card at a time as Ive been doing for years now. In the long run its probably just as cost efficent to keep cracking out low cost 8's and 9,s

I know some of these "High Grade" lots are not going to contain 100% perfect centered cards, but they should yield a certain % that are keepers to me and I'll move the rest out.

I rarely open stuff I buy John.

But the people here are gonna give ya good advice.

The only thing I can tell ya - is when a vending box starts showing up with numerous OC cards - the whole box could go that way. I found that with 83T BB e.g.

Another thing - besides here - I would not hesitate to call BBCE and ask Steve his opinion - he will not steer ya wrong.

Good luck and please post what ya pull if ya have the time.

I just opened a wax box of '78 Topps Football and the cards were beautiful. The corners were really sharp and I pulled around 20 or so sub worthy cards.(my sub worthy cards are only ones that have shots at 10) I think I scrutenize them too much compared to others I've seen but I've had good luck with my subs. The Dorsett I pulled is 8ish due to centering. I pulled 4 Tarkentons, 2 Bradshaws, 1 Payton, 2 Staubachs, 1 Fouts, and most of the other stars. The only card I didn't pull was the regular issue OJ.
