What happened?

I was a sportscard collector(mostly MLB,NBA and NHL) way before I ever collected coins. My interest in cards has recently re-surfaced. I stopped buying and selling around 1997ish and I am wanting to know what the heck happened to the values? I never bought cards with any expectation of a profit or even a return on the money I spent. I honestly loved the players, the game, the stats, the photography,etc... So for me, coming back and seeing that I may be able to afford some of the cards that I could not back then is a good thing. But I would love to hear the perspectives of you that may have been collecting the last 10-12 years. Thanks! image

  • Apparently there was a very large surplus of trees in the 1990's.

Interesting POV Pop - of course - nothing we haven't talked about....

    Reasons for decline in collecting:

    1. Too many sets to collect
    2. Price guides made everything about the money
    3. Over production of certain sets
    4. Rising pack prices
    5. Too many cards of individual players
    6. Graded cards
    7. Competition from video games

For the modern market - this is - to a greater or lesser degree - correct.

I have to say - when the sets exploded - things got crazy and confusing.

And - perhaps things may change - if the new card market were to shrink immensely - perhaps the price of packs will drop with the decrease in revenues to players.

That will allow kids to collect again with the 50s intention of cards: to provide tangible correlation between the child and the player they read/see/hear about.

Another thing - not sure I remember when - but there was a big "correction" in the value of sportscards in the last 90s - not even sure why.

The vintage market - especially the 'prewar' cards have not been affected by this and is rather strong IMO.

So - how to combat this?

    1. Collect what really gets ya excited.

    2. Establish a "focus" in ones goals. When the sets exploded - people felt they had to corner the market - that's impossible - so I don't.

    3. Establish a budget and remember one can go broke saving money on ebay.

Like the old adage about real estate...location....

In the hobby...focus, focus, focus...budget, budget, budget.

    Interesting.
