Raw 2 1/2's to ANACS then to PCGS- my 2nd post-
About 4 years ago I purchased several raw Indian 2 1/2's from an estate auctioneer in NY. I started noticing his poor pictures on the bay of e and decided to take a chance. At the time the going rate for a bad picture of a 2 1/2 was as low as $135 to $185. After winning a couple of auctions, I was able to get his phone number and called him. I ended up purchasing a total of 15 coins along with a couple of $10 Indians.
Before I go any further- I do not have pictures , I just started here and have yet to figure out how to load them.
Anyway, ANACS was having a gold special, 10 coins, 10 days, 10 dollars so I sent everything to them. The grades were across the board. About half were cleaned AU details, AU50, AU58, the only Liberty 2 1/2 was MS 61, 1925-D MS62, 1910 MS63, the two Indian 10's were AU 58 and MS 61. The best 2 1/2 by far, a 1912 came back not genuine !
I have to admit I was very disappointed by these results (although sort of excited with the two higher grades).
I decided to sell the 62 & 63 to quickly recoup some of my investment. I listed the 1912 on ebay as a jewelry coin, not genuine and it went for over $200. The high bidder on it collects fakes, and emailed me that it was the nicest fake coin he had ever seen, and was going to send it into PCGS because he liked it so much.
I went to a Long Beach coin show a while later and heard a couple of coin dealers talking about how difficult ANACS was on coins during a time period when I sent mine in. I decided to crack out the graded coins that I had left, and sent them all to PCGS. The results were about two grades higher on everything. The Indian 2 1/2s - AU50 to AU58, AU58 to MS 62, MS61 to MS 62, the Liberty 2 1/2 MS61 came back a 63 (I still have it, it looks like a jewel). The two 10's came back PCGS 61 & 62
I would read the posts on this board (during all of this) and everyone is talking about how hard PCGS is on grading (and here I am getting all of these upgrades, go figure). Don't get me wrong I have nothing against ANACS, but it does make me wonder what the MS 62 and MS63 would have graded by PCGS had I not sold them.

I am absolutely shocked that after buying a bunch of raw indians on eBay, you only ended up with one fake.
I am also surprised that a 61 could ever be mistaken for a 63, even with this series. The 61s usually look rough.
It happens though. And this is why you need to keep a close eye on the coin inside of that plastic. Some have the wrong number on them.

What?!? What the heck is PCGS going to do with a 'nice fake'?

Put it in a nice body bag?
