BISMARCK, N.D. - A man who authorities say has a long history of theft and deception has been sentenced in Bismarck to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to thefts involving wheat pennies and other rare coins.

South Central District Judge Tom Schneider sentenced Paul Smestad to concurrent 10-year terms on five felony theft counts. The 51-year-old Smestad will begin serving the time after he finishes a one-year sentence for contracting without a license.

Schneider sentenced Smestad as a habitual offender because of his criminal history.

Smestad was accused of getting $2,500 in wheat pennies weighing more than 400 pounds through an eBay transaction with a Michigan man but never paying for the coins. Wheat pennies were minted from 1909 to 1958.

After the charge became public people from around the country called authorities in Bismarck to report similar incidents.

Prosecutors are asking that Smestad be required to pay $16,473 in restitution to eight victims. A hearing will be held later.
