Barbers to Morgans - To - Morgan's Barbers

For the non Barber collectors - I posted to the Mega Barber Thread a few weeks ago that
I'd be making my way up the East Coast from Naples, Florida to my Summer cottage on Cape Cod.

Along the way, I had the distinct pleasure of visiting a number of fellow Barber collectors:
Darrell Mills, Brandon Johnson [ and his brother Will ], Don Soles, Tom Breivogel and Dan Flood.

My first stop was in Thomasville, Georgia to visit Darrell and to view his small but very elite set
of Barber Dimes and Half Dollars. His collection consists of only four coins but each was a joy to
behold. He brought out the coins in individual bubble-wrap and the first one I unwrapped was a
1910-P Dime in PCGS MS 67. My heart raced when I viewed it. Perfect creamy white centrals with
an array of absolutely beautiful rim toning colors on both sides. This was the Hugon coin. Just as
breathtaking was the next:

A 1897 Dime in PCGS PR 68 [ pedigree unknown, but purchased from Joe O'Connor, as all of his
four coins were purchased from.] This Proof Dime also had amazing colors, with peaches, roses,
amber, aqua and gold covering the entire surfaces. The coin was flawless and could just as easily
have been in a PR 69 holder.

The remaining two coins in Darrell's collection were Half Dollars: 1905-S EX: Eliasberg, PCGS 67;
a lightly toned and just amazing Half. The next was the Byers' 1907-D with near flawless surfaces,
in PCGS MS 66.

Darrell and I enjoyed a very lengthy conversation over dinner and had a great time.

My next stop was Columbia, SC to visit Brandon and Will Johnson. Brandon and I have been friends for
quite a few years and have swapped coins and sold off duplicates to each other. As a matter of fact, I
hand delivered my three duplicate 1898-POS Halves in PCGS 58/58/55.

Will - who collects only Morgans - brought his DMPL set and had a large group in old Doiley Holders.
I wish I knew more about Morgans but I appreciated viewing this large set of mirrored silver dollars.

It was great seeing all of Brandon's Barber Halves as well...as there was alot of old friends in the set.
I'm glad to have been of some help to Brandon in upgrading his collection from VF to AU.

We also had an enjoyable dinner at an Italian eatery that the Johnson Brothers took me to. I was
glad it wasn't a Sushi bar - as Brandon kidded me about.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My next stop was to Smithfield, VA to Don Soles, whose Wife, Nancy and Daughter, Lizzie, had prepared a wonderful meal
for us. After dinner Don, his son and I went to a neighbor's home to inspect his Barber collection. His neighbor, Chuck Morgan,
has one of the finest collections of Proof Barber Quarters and Halves I have had the priviledge of viewing.

Most of Mr. Morgan's coins were in NGC holders. Here is a quick breakdown:

1912 NGC 67 CAM
1913 NGC 66 CAM
1915 NGC 68 CAM.

Mr. Morgan was missing only four coins to complete his set.

When I say amazing, that's putting it mildly. I looked at his
collection for two hours. Don and I kept shaking our heads
as what was presented to us. We were blinded by the brilliance
of these coins as most were pure white and black cameos.

Mr. Morgan also had a few other Mint State Halves:
1897-O in NGC 66
1911-S NGC 66
1912-S NGC 67

as well as a lonely Proof Morgan of 1883 in PCGS PR 65.

After spending two hours with Mr. Morgan, Don and I went
back to his house to view his Barber Half collection - all perfectly
matched VF's with circulated cameo's. Don is also collecting
well circulated Commemoratives -and I have never seen such
a collection of circulated coins before. His pride and joy was the
Hawaiian in high grade VF.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following day, I drove up to Gettysburg, PA to visit Tom Breivogel.
He took me on a three hour tour of the Battlefields - and then to dinner
at a local Pub. After which he gave me a ride to remember in his classic
Baracuda. Loud and fast are an understatement. After which, we sat down
and looked over his collection. Tom had instant recall on each coin I looked at.
He remembered each grade, what he paid and from whom. All in all a very nice
collection and well worth the trip.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My final leg of the trip was to visit Dan Flood in Mahwah, NJ. Dan met me at
my hotel and took me to view a collection of a coin dealer in Ramsey, NJ.
It was amazing to view a complete set of Morgans in as close to GEM MS
as I have ever had the privelidge of viewing -all in an old Whitman Bookshelf album.
Later that evening Dan and I looked over his pride and joy - a very beautiful set
of Seated Liberty Dollars in high grade XF - to AU 58. The highlight was his 1873-CC
in XF .

While with Dan - I was able to pick up a beautiful upgrade to my quarter set:
a 1901-P in NGC 63 with great rim toning. Thanks again, Dan.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a side note - I received three gifts along the way from Brandon, Don and Tom.
After the first gift, I was thankful - after the second gift I became suspicious and
after the third gift, I was laughing...all were bottles of my favorite Irish Whiskey,
Jameson. There is a post buried along the Mega Thread about my spewing my Jameson
on my keyboard when I found out the bidder against me for numerous auctions was
none other than Don Soles under his eBay nom-de-plume. We had been bidding
against each other and sniping each other for many months before we realized who
we were.

The trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I throughly enjoyed myself.

Please excuse any typo's.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay - am off to the beach for a couple of mile walk.

Happy hunting, everyone !!

Thanks for the update Mike sounds like a great trip.
  • Mike,

I enjoyed reading your "road report", and I'm glad to have been part of your Barber Tour. Maybe next time we can hook up in your neck of the woods, either Florida or Mass, depending on where you're living at the time. I've never been to the FUN show, or a coin show in the Boston area, so either one would be a big treat.

    Mike,
As I stated earlier, it was a pleasure to meet you and I enjoyed our time together. You are welcome to stop by on your way back to Florida. Tina said that she would enjoy seeing some pictures of the Cape Cod area if you have any.

    Have a great vacation.

Great post, Mike. Sounds like you have seen some very nice, and some outright spectacular collections along your journey.
Enjoy the rest of your time in Cape Cod.....a little ironic though, that you have a better (or worse?) chance of being in a hurricane up there than down here later this week!

Great trip and recording of same, Mike.

This is a great benefit of the networking that has developed through these message boards, the registry sets, and all tie together from the internet.

Instead of each of us being scattered individuals collecting, we have this virtual coin club with collectors from all over the country.

I'm glad I live in such times.

Sshhhh...Greg, don't tempt fate. I think Hurricane Bill will veer off the Cape - based on the numbers of people coming down to my
area of Cape Cod - I think most people feel confidant that the storm will veer to the East - towards Nova Scotia.

Glad you enjoyed the report. I would have detailed Brandon's, Don's and Tom's Barber collections in greater detail...but I
didn't take notes - ie: Mr. Morgan's collection. I should have written a better description of Dan's Seated Dollar set but
    I neglected notes. Sorry all.

I'll be at FUN in Orlando in January as well as the Boston ANA show next August. Dan, we'll catch up
with each other long before then. However, Naples is 3 1/2 hours from Orlando and Boston is about
    that far from North Truro.

On my road trip back - I'll be visiting friends in Wash., DC, Richmond, VA, Jacksonville, FL
then back home to Naples. Thanks for the offer though, Darrell.

Casey - thank you for the images you sent - really appreciate it.

You're right, Peter - these are good times for communications with
other collectors. The internet has done wonders for me and my
collecting and the opportunity of meeting so many fellow Barberites
that I normally would never would have met.
