My Next Baseball Set.. Board Build..You decide..I will build it here on the boards..

I can't decide on which baseball set to tackle next..

So I decided I would let the boards decide:

Here are the choices and grades:

1952 Topps PSA 5, 6, and 7 ( I have the Mantle in a 7 already), (Pfarko and Mathews will be killers to purchase)

1956 Topps PSA 7 and 8 ( I have the Mantle in an 8 already)

1959 Topps PSA 7 and 8 ( I am pretty aware of the tough cards in this set)

1963 Topps PSA 8 ( I have heard this set is a monster next to the 62's)

1967 Topps PSA 8 ( Looks pretty easy except for a few low pop commons)

Ok the most votes win...and I will try to make a large first purchase on the set we decide..

I will make this a board build, meaning as I get the cards I will post them on this thread and we will see how long it takes to build the set from scratch.

I already have an idea as to what you guys will decide but maybe I will be wrong.

I think it will be fun to post the buys on the boards, we will track the costs, and see how much it costs to build the set.

One we decide on a set, we will then guess the cost it will take to complete it. The board member who comes closest will get a prize of my choice once the set is done. If that board member is no longer here,

the next closest will get the prize.

I got a few pms' on some of the other sets I have...

The 73 and 75 set is a work in progress and cards are being submitted to psa to complete those sets, so I am not really buying those cards.

The 57 set, I have a huge purchase I am waiting on which will push me to over 80% complete and I am down to 50 or so cards, the 74's I need are on the way to psa and should be wrapped up once the grades pop.
So, I need a new project.

I thought it would be fun to see what we can build. Like I said, I will buy the cards, you guys help me search them out, I will post every scan of every card I buy along with price and we will see the total cost to build the set.
I will name the set on the registry "IJustLoveCards with the PSA Boards Help"

The Link below will take you to the PSA Boards 1952 Set Build, I also have made 5 slideshows each slideshow is 100 cards long, card numbers 1-99,100-199,200-299,300-399, and 400-407

I voted '56s because I think the portraits and action shots make for one of the best designed card sets of all time. I'm building the set in raw form, low-mid grade with decent centering. Slowly but surely.

My vote is for the 1956. It has all the big stars of the day Williams, Robinson, Campy, Koufax & Mantle. I realize there are no real big rookies, but it was the first Topps set that was representative of major league baseball at the time. Besides, the photography is great and I love the mix of the action shot with a nice head shot.

  • '56 set. If you would have decided this earlier, I could have helped you out with some Braves cards image
One of my favorite vintage sets. Good luck with whatever you go after.

Excellent point on the stars...the '56 set does have a great mix of big name HOF'ers. Though, all of the sets you mention aren't lacking much for star power.

I HAD to vote for the '52 set. THE MICK was my idol growing up ... and in my mind that is the mainstream set that started our great hobby. One other reason is that I KNOW I will NEVER be able to build my own set.

EDITED TO ADD: Total cost to build the set is $77,777.77 ... In honor of THE MICK!

Easy for me to say but I would go after the '52 set hands down. It should always hold value and be a sought after set, having the Mantle in 7 is a great start!

As far as your cost I dont want to embaress myself as I never bought a '52 card so Im unaware of pricing- to take a stab at it for 5,6,7 grade? Geeze I would guess roughly 65K?

I voted 56 just because I like how the set looks.
Good luck with whichever set wins.

The mantle is around 35K already ( my cost was less), I doubt we could build it for 30 more K, I think probably more like 50K more There are some real biggies in there.

I voted '59 because I've started to tackle that one a couple of times with a large first purchase lot and never could win it so I moved to another set. Any of them will be fun to follow.

It's really so hard to guess ... AFTER Mantle, take the next 5 most expensive cards in the set. If you bought them in a "7" or in a "5" right there it could be a difference of ~$20,000.00.

Whatever set you build, and I am sure I am saying this for ALL of us on this board ... GOOD LUCK and we can't wait to see the pics!

I also voted for the '56's. As previously said, all the big name stars are there, and I love the look of them. I'm also building a mid-grade set myself slowly but surely.

Remember We are going to do this together, I will hope you guys help me find the cards, we will track all the costs, I will buy them, post them, update the registry, but its a board project...

You are correct on those cards, once we decide on the set, we will decide where to spend the big dollars, ie. do we get the card in a 6, 7 ,8 whatever.

I vote 1989 Upper Deck. That vintage set is awesome!
  • Anything but PSA 8 1959 Topps set , I'm collecting that set and don't need anymore competition.

So the 1952 Topps set would be better.

Felicia, Normally I would say the 56 set, but since you have the 55 set I would vote for the 52s. While the content of the 55s and 56s differ, the card portraits are identical on many cards.
  • BunkerBunker Posts: 3,926
I voted for the 63's, in PSA 8 those cards would look great, I especially like the Rose Rookie card.

Felica I'd like to see you do the 67 topps set I know it in last place on the vote but not as easy as one would think.
I just completed my 67 set on the registry early in the spring. But then again I am a centering nut so it was a killer to finish for me.

I voted 56's. I think most people will say 52 because they would like to do it themselves but can't. 52 is the obvious choice as far as a tough set but 56 looks nicer IMO. Anyways, have fun building whichever set you choose.
