1971 Kellogg's Master Set (194 cards)

I was wondering if all the 1971 Kelloggs variation cards come with both "1970 Xograph" and "Xograph" backs ? If so, there would be 204 cards for a Master Set. Does card # 64 Fregosi have 8 variations ? I would think the total maximum is 201 , but it may in reality be a little below this number. I have confirmed 192 different as of July, 2010.

Kellogg experts please help. Thanks for your time in this matter. Mike

  • Still awaiting more information from Kellogg collectors on the 1971 Set. In theory a total of 204 different cards was possible. I have now been able to verify 174 different versions for a Master Set. I think this is very close to the maximum, since many of the variations did not come with both the Xograph and 1970 Xograph backs. Email me if you have any variations etc. and I'll send you a chart to see if we can finally come up with the official master list. email:theline06@hotmail.com. Thanks for your time. Mike
  • After all the research and help from fellow collectors it appears that a 1971 Kelloggs Master Set is complete at 176 cards ( 96 with "1970 Xograph backs" and ( 80 with "Xograph backs").
In my opinion the "toughest" five cards are ( in no particular order):

    # 7 Alou ( 1970 Oakland NL)
    # 28 Wright (Angles Crest Logo)
    # 54 Johnson ( Angles Crest Logo)
    # 64 Fregosi ( Angles Crest Logo)
    # 70 Osteen ( No Number on back)

It appears that the first printing was ( 75 cards with "Xograph" backs, they stopped the presses and changed the 5 above cards, then made all 75 cards with the "1970 Xograph " backs and then stopped the presses and changed 21 cards).

See attached enclosed charts ( the empty spaces have not been verified, and I don't think they exist). If you have any of these please email me at :theline06@hotmail.com and I'll add to the list.

Sorry the attachments didn't work. Email me if interested and I'll attach the charts to you.

Thanks again to all that helped.

    Mike

  • Update: Add 2 more variations to the above list. # 2 Tom Seaver ( 1970 ERA 2.85 and 1970 ERA 2.81) and # 41 Cito Gaston ( Runs 112, RBI 121 and Runs 113 and RBI 122). Total Master Set now would be 178. Both come with 1970 Xograph backs.
  • The Gaston card with 112/ 121 numbers is the more common of the statisctical variations. Additionally, It comes with both the xograph and the 1970 xograph. The 113/122 version (from my research) only comes with the 1970 xograph marking.
    Hope that helps.

  • The Seaver card with the 1970 ERA of 2.85 is the more common version. Like the Gaston variation, this card comes with both the 1970 xograph and the xograph back. From what I can tell, the 1970 2.81 ERA version only comes with the 1970 Xograph marking.

  • GAlveston: My research totally agrees with your previous observations. I believe that the total variations would be 178. Email me for a chart. I can't get the attachment to work on here. Do you also indicate 178 ? thanks

    PS #2 Seaver actually has 4 changes ( IP 290,291 and 1092 , 1093 and ERA 2.85, 2.81 and 2.50 and 2.49).

I not sure why these two variations (Seaver and Gaston) have not been reported before in SCD Big Catalog or on PSA Master Set List. They must be very difficult.
  • I have never really gotten into the difference between xograph backs and the 1970 xograph backs but i think you are correct....... However, I am very much interested in the statistical variations.
to find two new cards after all these years is incredible.....

  • That's for all the help on this Master Set project. It appears that the total is now at around 200. I have seen over 180+ myself. New additions are card # 65 Pete Rose RBI 53 and 486 on both the 1970 Xograph and Xograph (common) and the newly discovered RBI 52, 485) which is only 1970 Xograph. Also Clyde Wright # 28 comes in 2 varieties of the "State of California logo" Career Stats (IP 617/619),Hits (579 and 583), ER 231/232),BB 212/211 and SO 280/284). 1970 ERA Stats are either 2.85 common version and 2.83 tough version. The Standard Catalog will be listing all the new cofirmed variations in the next addition.
Instead of just the 26 I think listed, I now know of 24 more ( looks like 79 in Xograph and 121 in 1970 Xograph. The Master Set will be greatly revised.

  • I can now confirm 192 different 1971 Kellogg cards. Should be a few more out there but I can't confirm yet.
  • Counting both "Xograph" and " 1970 Xograph" backs I have confirmed 193 variations. If only interested in variations ( not including the back variations) the total is now verified at 122 ( NOT 101) for a Master Set. It will be interesting to see who gets the first Master Set Registered with 122. This is as of 11-2-2010. I will update if any others become verified.
  • Counting both "Xograph" and " 1970 Xograph" backs I have confirmed 194 variations. If only interested in variations ( not including the back variations) the total is now verified at 123 ( NOT 101) for a Master Set. It will be interesting to see who gets the first Master Set Registered with 123. This is as of 11-22-2011 I will update if any others become verified.

    1970 Xograph back - 117
    Xograph back - 77

Latest variation is # 72 Nate Colbert Hits 278 (common) 279 ( new variation confirmed ).

122 are listed in the new "Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards" 2011 Edition. Only the Nate Colbert is not listed.
  • It's been almost 8 years and I haven't found or been notified of anymore 1971 Kelloggs Variations. It's still a total of 194 cards. 1970 Xograph Back : 117, Xograph Back : 77. Still waiting for PSA to list card # 72 of Nate Colbert in the Master Set. It was listed in the "Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards " 2014 Edition - 4th Edition.
Any suggestions of how to get this listed ? Do I just send in both cards and then it will be added ? Thanks

Yes, you have to have a PSA graded copy and be a participant in that set’s registry. At that point you can “report a Cert that matches this composite.”

How were these cards distributed/issued. Were they sent thru the mail like other Kellogg’s sets from the 70’s?

1970 came out of the cereal boxes and via inclusion into the "Iron-On" rack packs from what i am aware of- haven't seen a 3rd distribution method but would love to know if there was one I'm not aware of :# . I'll look how 71 came out besides teh boxes give me a week to check my backup. When I have more time I'll see what variations exist in my PC for 1970/71 that haven't been listed. Since I'm spread over 3 states that may take time I'll bookmark this page for now just came across it.

Normal out of the cereal- we all should remember these backs of the Kelloggs cereal boxes :)
