DANSCO 7070 Type Set THEMES

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,518 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you are putting together a DANSCO type set are you doing so with a theme in mind? For example, I have always admired the idea of putting together a set of first year issues (ie: 1916 Mercury dime; 1932 Washington quarter, 1878 Morgan dollar).

I also know of someone who is putting together a set of fairly high grade material but each coin has a hole in it.

Do you collect with a certain goal in mind outside of just completion?

Also, do you have more than one set you are collecting, each with its own purpose?

  • I have thought of several ideas but not working on any of them.

    1) Last year of issue
    2) Fill as many holes as possible with the same date
    3) All Proofs
    4) P to G

Same year different type (i.e. 1837 bust half dime, 1837 seated half dime; 1867 ray and no rays shield nickels; 1921 morgan and peace dollars etc.).

I think a set of all VF coins would be attractive and the hunt would be in locating the moderns with light to moderate wear.
A VF30 Kennedy next to a VF Franklin and VF Walker and Barber is an attractive display.

It always looks a little off when there are five VF coins in a row and suddenly a sparkling gem bu coin appears.

  • Im going for nicely toned coins...I am on a budget so some of them will be way beyond what i can afford. Either way Im not in a huge worry to finish it off within the next few years so I will be saving up to acquire some nicely toned samples

I am working on a F-EF set. I have found a few nice pieces of pocket change to fit in for the moderns.

I'm trying to do a first year or last year issue. Some first year issues are impossible to get and still afford to pay bills.

  • My favorite so far is the clipped planchet set a formum member showed off recently.

My set is in the early stages and I am struggling with the overall look (a BU page with modern coins stands out like a sore thumb after a really interesting page of attractive circulated pieces).

I hope to get more ideas from this thread.

Guys, do you consider the gold page a part of your set?

You're either referring to my set, or to someone I really need to talk to. image I need to figure out how other forum members are able to get nice full-page pics of their 7070 albums, mine look like tan pages full of black dots.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

I just started a set, we'll see how it goes. I'm targeting nicely toned first year of issue.

I had never heard of a 7070 before I started reading these boards. My type set is from 1792 to modern times in holed, or otherwise destroyed. I prefer the keys in the highest technical grade I can find, and can afford. Inflation has hit some of them very hard. I still need many. I will probably never complete it. I have expanded it to include mintmarks plus obverse and reverse examples when it is displayed.

Since eBay has been around, coins are at least 100 times easier to find. So much inventory is available online I started to collect by date and mintmark, including gold $1s and $3s. Have limited my other gold wants just to type, and NOT the keys. Too pricey for me. You ever see 10s or 20s holed? Not often, I bet.
  • I'm not using a Dansco, I'm using an Intercept Shield album. Either way, I'm going about it by making some of the more "common" coins a bit more exciting (by being a semi-key or key date) or interesting (a coin with some sort of story or importance behind it). A few examples of what I put in:

Steel Lincoln Cent- 1943 S (not much excitement here, except the S is a bit rarer than the P or D)
    Clad Roosevelt Dime- 1996 W
40% Silver Kennedy Half- 1970 D (Intercept Shield actually only has a slot for 1965-present clad Kennedy)
    Franklin Half- 1949 S
Morgan Dollar- 1884 CC (just wanted any CC Morgan)
1 of 4 Commemorative Half Dollars- 1982 George Washington (not exciting by any means, but does have some significance being the first 90% silver coin since 1964 and first commemorative in the modern era, and it has George Washington on it)

Also plan on doing a 1921 Peace Dollar (high relief), 1950 D Jefferson, 1949 S Silver Roosevelt, and a 1970 small date Lincoln Memorial cent.

I don't plan on going all key or semi-key dates, since there are many coins where even common dates in MS condition are in the hundreds. I'm also doing the last page (commemoratives, bicentennials, westward journey nickels, state quarter, etc) in proofs. I did the bicentennial coins in silver proof.
