Hypothetically: Garrett Anderson plays three more seasons and ends with 3002 hits...

Well ... he is only averaging 147 hits/year over the last 5 seasons ... so he will have to play another four years at his current pace ... he will be over 40 by that time ... it may be a tough thing for him to do.

Even if he does, I don't think he deserves it. His lifetime avg is .296

He has stuck out 1168 times in 8332 ABs ... Almost power hitter numbers ... and he has only 296 HRs. JMO.

  • Except for striking out much more frequently, and playing in an easier era...he is basically a Bill Buckner clone hitting wise.

    His career OPS+ is 104.

If he does hang on another three years, expect that to drop to 99 or so.

His best FIVE OPS+ seasons are...

    131
    127
    121
    114
    107

In terms of baseball value, 3,000 hits, when added with the rest of his mediocre numbers, is not nearly worthy of a HOF player.

However, it isn't beyond the realm of the ignorant writers to vote him in based on that artificial number...after all, they put Jim Rice in.

He has ZERO chance of getting in even if he gets to 3,000....

with the trend of players playing well into their 40s rising exponentially, 3,000 hits will not be such a magical number in 20 years (see related Bill James thread).

Are there any players with 3000+ hits that are NOT in the HOF?

All of 'em who are eligible (re Pete Rose) are in the HOF.

The test will be when Rafael Palmeiro becomes eligible.

Doubt he'll get there, but I'd say "yes" if he made it. Won't happen though...
    Enjoy your collection!
