funny thing about scientists, they don't always know everything. Just like right after the hurricane season of 2005 when they claimed the sky was going to fall in 2006 and 2007. To which the US got pretty well passed up completely.

    Makes you wonder some times.

True! This one has a tight eye and winds are already
somewhere around 90 MPH soon to be around 130 MPH.

Reminds me very much of Hurricane Andrew!

Be careful guys. Don't take these lightly.

Start preparing ASAP - before the RUSH!

I'm watching it. Right now, projections are to hit Bermuda on Saturday as a category 3. Subject to change, of course, on a moment's notice.

All projections are it will go up the East coast off shore as a cat 3 hurricane. I'd say the Jersey coast and Long Island may get very wet. I'm in Houston and we got our a$$'s cleaned last September with IKE. Didn't hurt my home, but took a lot of shingles, trees from my neighborhood and flooding. Some of the trees fell into neighbors homes. Power for us was out for 6 days with other areas up to 3 weeks.

We were prepared with pre-cut window plywood and all provisions. Winds were recorded at 141 kts 3 miles from where I am.

If you're in a probability zone for a hurricane, be prepared............Rick

I'm about two miles from the Chesapeake Bay. I got a Honda EU6500iSA generator two years ago and had it tied into my house via a transfer switch. I kind of want to test it out for real but nothing too major. I think it would be a little fun riding out a hurricane.

Posted an hour ago by the NY Times. Still valid?

MIAMI –- Hurricane Bill was getting stronger on Monday, but it did not seem like a threat to Florida and the rest of the United States, churning on a curving, northerly path that could carry it out to sea and a quiet death.

as a "lightning strike survivor" I tend to get much more defensive and paranoid about thunderstorms. Very much more in your face and in your backyard all too often.

If aliens ever come to this planet...for a visit, the thing that will amaze them the most is that we take these huge electrical discharges from the sky in kind of a ho hum manner, and pretty much ignore them.

Thanks. I looked at TWC last night, but not since.

We haven't had a direct hit on this part of the GA coast since 1898, but many say we're overdue for that reason.

I hope we can go another 100 years.

I am 10 miles from the Chesapeake bay in Southern Maryland/ St Marys where it really shoves water inland....

I live on high ground, my 5 acres perks very well, but worried about more huge trees coming crashing down. Good luck everyone. Prayers are stated for all.. George

It's gonna veer off to the northeast once it passes by Bermuda -- Nova Scotia will probably get hit with an extratropical storm (a formerly tropical storm that has lost its tropical characteristics bur can still pack a wallop).

East coasters should be spared everything but some rough surf.

You might think so, but it really isn't -- especially if you get flooded out or the building you're in gets damaged.

The generator's cost seems minor when you really need the power. We purchased our Generac XP8000E in May. Since then it has gathered dust in the garage. Last thursday night we were able to put it to use are a thunderstorm knocked out local power. With a transfer switch we had all the essential circuits humming. I can hardly imagine what it would be like to depend on a generator for a week after a hurricane.

Guys, I've overheard the possibility of a lot more water <storm surge-wise> than a foot or two.

It doesn't have to make landfall around you to cause some serious issues with high water.

Just keep a close eye on this if you're anywhere along the coast, close to the projected path.

It's generally the surge that causes problems, many times catching people totally unprepared.

I (meaning NOAA and the NHC) don't see Bill coming closer to Hatteras than about 400 miles, and then it should shift course to the northeast from there.

Even if it does not make landfall isn't that projected route heading right into some major shipping lanes? Could be some damaged cargo before this is all over.

It's 40 years since Hurricane Camille, which was the strongest storm ever recorded. Until Andrew and Katrina, it was the costliest natural disater in us History.

As John Fogerty sang "Bad Moon Rising" at Woodstock, Camille was heading for Gulfport Mississippi. I lived in Gulfport about 15 years later and they still hadn't recovered fully from it. Of course Katrina washed it all away again.

    I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
    I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like were in for nasty weather.

Thanks for the Warning - DC Metro (Silver Spring, MD) last got hit hard about 5 or so years ago. We were out of power for close to 5 days. I have a generator now wired to my whole house. I have been watching it. Not a lot make it up this far with anything left in them. We'll see! Coins are locked up tight! I better fill the gas cans!

  • I believe that Bill is due to take a swing northward over the open Atlantic and shouldn't be a problem. I could be wrong as this info is 24 hours old, however. I hope I'm right.

It looks (for now) that Bill is going to miss Maryland. But since these things are unpredictable, I better go out and get some more vodka, cranberry juice, & chips. image

Very interesting wave and surf reports from all the weather bureaus. Possible epic surf. For the east coast with 20 foot plus breakers at Hatteras and at least 10 foot plus everywhere else north of Florida. The more remarkable is the period between waves. 15 Seconds. For those who do not surf, the higher the number, the more the energy. Or in another perspective, a 15 sec. period is common on the west coast, but nearly unheard of on the east coast.

You've got the right idea, TooTawl.

Yeah WS, you guys are sure to get some very heavy surf, for sure.

This thing need not make landfall to impact you.

Surf from the outer bands alone will be huge.

The surge around the eye will certainly be lethal!

Be careful guys and BE READY!
