Review Submission Poppage - PSA 9 '71 Raymond!

After two long months of waiting my grades finally popped from the May review special. The highlight was definitely my PSA 8 1971 Claude Raymond bumping to a 9 which makes the whole submission. This is either the second or third PSA 9 graded depending on whether the pop report has already been updated to reflect mine. Does anyone know if a 9 has sold and for how much? VCP shows no activity but I thought I had seen one being auctioned.

Was the Raymond the only whole grade bump or was there other 8's that became 9's? Also, any 7's that became 8's or 9's? I can't tell with rewiew poppage. Give us a more thorough poppage. Great job on the Raymond. I believe Ron was right on. Don't fiddle faddle around. Contact the big man. Would you sell it for $10,000? He probably would pay that or more.image

Thanks! Yes, they were all 8s originally. These were all the sub $100 value cards. I submitted some of the nicer star cards from various sets as well as a cross section of assorted commons to get a feel for how they review. Had some disappointments like the '71 Grich. I pulled that directly from a cello. It has great centering and razor sharp corners. The only flaw may be slightly grainy print (not snow or print dots or even out of focus but just not as sharp as most cards).

These were all 8's, so all the 9s were full grade bumps. I also had my 1970 Bench bump to a 9 on my >$100 submission which popped about a month ago.

Congratulations on the PSA 9 Raymond as it will surely go for big bucks. As for a private sale to Don Spence, it may happpen, but it is no guarantee. Here is an email I got from Mr Spence recently after he passed on the offer of my POP 2 PSA 10 Tony Oliva:

"The card is beautiful. When considering the purchase of a post 1960 card, there are a lot of those cards that have been graded, especially 1972. I am hesitant to spend a lot of money on a low POP card knowing that more will be available in the future. My choice would be to buy a vintage card for the same money."

While I agree totally with what he wrote, I think he was just feeding me a line because he overspends on modern low pops like a sailor on shore leave.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
He would rather bid on it and win then to buy it outright.

Same thing happened to me with a pop 2 54 Bowman I emailed him about.

He bid big and won it.

In the future there will not be alot of Raymonds' graded a 9. That is a very tough card. That Oliva is a nice card but the Raymond card is legendary amongst 1971 collectors. Put it on EBAY with a 15,000 BIN. JMO.

Do you have a scan of it as a PSA 8?
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,099 ✭✭✭✭✭
Maybe I'll list it for $100,000. image Just kidding. I may list it with a fairly high BIN to see if it sells. I'll still need an 8 for my set though, so I'd have to get a significant premium to make it worth selling.

Yep same story I have heard about Don from dealers trying to sell him cards for his sets. Maybe he thinks everyone is out to screw him over on price so he only goes online to buy? I would be much more afraid of shillers on the bay than I woud of a dealer who needs his buisness as one of the number one buyers of low pops in the world.

Thanks Felicia I thought so. When I saw someone say list it for 15k I was wondering.

Spence usually snipes so he does not have to worry about shills.

Of course the shill could have already been done.

But by sniping he can at the least decide if he wants to bid.

    Great guy btw.

I said 15 grand just for the heck of it. But if you think of it; there are only 3 and one just sold. This may be the only one that could hit the market for some time. I personally don't care about the card but I understand the significance. Send it to the auction house that sold the 62 Maris-Cepeda card in PSA 8 for $5000---you might get like 10 million for the Raymond card.image

My pleasure! image I guess the value of my 9 just went down 50%. With only 21 9's, that shows how tough that card is. It's as tough as the '69 Brock, just not as famous a player. Though being a common probably means fewer were put in holders in the 70s and 80s. I bet many of the scarce centered examples were destroyed being displayed in commons binders at card shows over the years prior to the popularity professional grading.

    << <i>Gemint,

I actually bought a high grade raw set from Mastro (before the scandals). The set came with already graded PSA 9's of Frank Robinson, Bob Gibson and a few others but most cards were left raw.

I submitted the Raymond with a bunch of other '71s from the set and got hammered on the submission. So I'm not really surprised it bumped. I have a stack of PSA 7's from that same set from the same submission that I plan to crack and resubmit. Some of those 7s look better than many 8s out there. I'm certain at least some of those are going to grade an 8 as long as I don't get the grader of death again.
  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,250 ✭✭✭✭
The consignor and Mastro both didn't notice a Mint Raymond. WOW. To me that's news. When I see 71's in a set I'm looking for the Raymond and a few others.

I would get that card out of my hands fast if it belonged to me. Low pop 8's are one thing, but low pop 9's of a card that's tough in 8 needs to be sold and sold fast before the pop goes up!

Back in the day, many CLEAN sets came from mastro. Just ask Scott Bradshaw. He had purchased many of his high grades sets from Mastro years ago. Those are the sets he has on display at the yearly National that everyone talks about.

I purchased a 69 set from Mastro years ago and the Brock was a lock 9, but in an 8 holder. I cracked and submitted to PSA and got the 9 it deserved. Sold for $5,000.00 and its still the only 9 out there

WOW!! Congratulations on the bump! That card must be gorgeous.

With the value of PSA 8s skyrocketing now since the population dropped, maybe I should submit my PSA 7 for review (worst thing would be for them to say no).

I have sold several PSA 9 71s and it is all about the pop in that particular grade, less about the pop in lower grades
Pop 3's go for around $400-$600
    I just sold a Dick Green 258 psa 9 (pop 3 - and also a tough card in 8) for under $400
The Raymond will carry a premium because it is sort of a legendary tough card
    I'd guess around $1000 now that it's a pop 3

I hope you get more, though

I'd be surprised if it went that low since 8's have sold for $850-$1600. If it doesn't sell I have no problem keeping it in my set.

That is news. They strip the raw sets. I can't believe Derek Grady let that one go. Maybe he was still at SGC. Wait, did he ever leave, maybe he was working for Mastro's and SGC at the same time. I just checked SGC's website and he is the VP, Director of grading. I thought after he left Mastro's he went to Heritage. These people seem to recyle themselves.

Thanks. I'm still PO'd that Grady was allowed to enter and win the grading contest PSA held a few years ago. That was like sponsoring a shootout at an NBA fanfest and allowing LeBron to participate.

I actually got some nice cards in Mastro sets in past years. I do think Grady was there at the time. It was around the time I bought a '70 set and had called him to ask his opinion about the grade of some of the key cards. I guess if they stripped sets of high value commons, it would probably more likely be 1950s sets than 1970s sets.

"I've seen a lot of things in my life, and that was awesome."

As for the first PSA 9, it sold for a little over $500. Even at that time, I thought that was low. Don't under estimate the value here. Could easily pass 2K. For a time, PSA 8's were going for over grand. Congrats on the bump!

According to VCP, the 8's have been hovering around a grand. The last one sold in March, so I'm guessing the next one that comes up will be over a grand again.

    3/7/09 17 $851.00
    1/22/09 13 $1,026.99
    1/18/09 15 $849.00
    12/21/08 14 $1,358.88
    7/20/08 12 $1,399.99
    7/13/08 19 $1,562.77
    6/26/08 24 $1,302.77
    12/6/06 eBay $635.89
  • I am sorry, But I think I pretty much know this set as well as anyone, I don't mean to come off rude and if I do I apologize upfront.

But let me set the record straight on the raymond card.

First of all it is the most difficult card to find centered in the 71 set due to its placement on the sheet.
The 71's are broken into series, with the 4th series ending at 528. So the 5th series, which includes the raymond is the last card on the sheet on the first row, and is prone to miscuts, wear on the edges, and major centering problems.

We have seen this charateristic with other "end of sheet" cards in various years.

    Now for the values,

Raymond in a 7 will sell for around 70.00 I have seen the card go for more than 100.00, as many collectors of the set cant afford the 8. as well as the fact that there just isn't enough 8's to go around for the all 8 71 set builders.

The 8's as evidenced by gemmits vcp data will go anywhere from 800-1600.00 depending on the day.
There are only 21 8's ( gemmints 8 will subtract 1 from the total thus leaving 21 from the 22 pop it was today).
There are now 3 PSA 9's in the card with the last sale being 2 1/2 years ago on ebay for around 5500.00 I watched that auction and was outsniped at the end for the card. I know for a fact that was the price as my snipe was set at 4800.00 and I didnt even sniff the card.

    Gemmint,
I would put it up on ebay with a reserve for which you could live wth and go for it. If spence or any other big buyer is interested they will find it and pay you for it.
If you want me to write him and let him know its there, pm me, I will do so via email or text.

Or he could give Felicia first crack at it at a fair price and return some of the goodwill she's shown to CU board members.

Before Treetop sold the card to Gaspipe, didn't he originally buy it from ImodiumMan?
