First I want to say how much I appreciate everyone's kind words. Brings a tear to my eye as I feel this community is like an extended family and everyone has touched me in a way that really can't be described so I thank you all. image

Got a little time to update as we are home tonight (not fun having to leave your child behind in the NICU) and trying to get a couple things done around here that need to be taken care of before we head back to Bangor.

Would like to introduce everyone to our little bundle of joy. image

He was born on Aug 18th 2009 at 5:45 AM and weighed in at 5 lbs 12 ounces. Although my wife had been having contractions since the time she went to our local hospital here at 4:00 AM on Monday the actual labor took 10 minutes.

Like last time with our first born I was there through it all and helped the best I could. The nurses and doctor was great and I was the first one of us to see our little Wyatt come into the world. A very emotional time for both my wife and I and I of course broke down into tears of joy/relief when holding our newborn son.

At first we were told he was going to have to stay in the NICU for 4 to 6 weeks. He was placed in an infant care bed which has a heater above it to maintain body temperature. My memory of time is very messed up due to lack of good sleep but there was a time of a few hours after he was placed in the bed with the heater and we went from our room back down to NICU. When we went into the room where Wyatt is he was no longer under the heater and was maintaining the body temperature on his own. No problems with lungs/oxygen levels and no heart problems. He hadn't taken his first poo so this morning I had gave him a good talking to and when we went to feed him before coming home I did my first of many diaper changes and guess he listened to his old man as he had a nice surprise waiting for me. image

So here is where we are at. Best case scenario is if he can do his feedings and keep most of it down we are told 1 week and he can come home. His feedings started last night and was started on 10 cc. He had 4 feedings of 10 cc and when I fed him today before coming home he went up to 16 cc. At that time we had our first disagreement with one of the nurses. She wasn't happy that his feedings were not going fast enough and said he would be tube fed. We had already discussed with one of the doctors about the feedings and had been assured that when they increased his feedings and if he couldn't do it that they would lower the intake. To us that sounded very reasonable as he is just a little over a day old and as we have been feeding him he is figuring out the sucking and swallowing very well. We want him to be able to continue this because if they immediately stick a tube in him because he's not eating fast enough for the nurse (she acts like he needs to suck it all down in 2 to 5 minutes) the steps forward we have done in such a little time will be stopped in there tracks and will have to redo what we have already accomplished in such a short time. By the way the feeding I did today might have taken a total of 10 minutes and that was with a short time to burp him (they have not been doing that).

So after arguing back and forth with the nurse today with her saying the doctor doesn't have the final say as it's up to the nurse that is assigned we did in fact file a complaint. We're not trying to step on toes and create problems and if it were a serious medical issue we would step back but this little guy needs a chance to do this. Tonight my wife called up to get a progress report. So from his 12:00 feeding they went from 16 cc to 35 cc. They say he did very good but threw up a little bit (remember that they haven't been burping him). They called the doctor and discussed what we had stated for concerns and the doctor said to lower the intake. So his last feeding was 25 cc. We will call in the morning and see what happens over night.

I will update when I can but as of now we are just winging it and going day by day.

    Glad it is working out.

We had problems with our nurses too; the important thing is don't let them talk you into a decision you aren't comfortable with. Nurses are NOT supposed to be making judgment calls- that is why it takes so long to become a doctor. they should be reporting to a doctor and the doctor makes the final decisions. Seems like you guys are doing what you feel is best and I'm glad the situation seems to be improving every day.

I'm dog tired but want to thank everyone again on the kind words. image

This is our second preemie so although it still sucks we at the very least have the previous experience to help us with what is going on with Wyatt and that's why we're a bit more vocal with what's going on. I'm hoping his feedings go great through out the night and if I get a chance will gladly update this tomorrow.

Update before we head back to Bangor.

Wyatt's feedings went well during the night and is currently taking an ounce and they are going to increase that over the course of the day.

He does have jaundice but that is no real surprise so he get's to spend some time doing photo therapy.

Mom is doing great. I'm so proud of her. Obviously stressed out over not being with the little guy last night but we'll be spending as much time at the hospital that we can.

Going to crash at my brother's house just across the river from the hospital and hopefully will only be a few days.

Updates when I get back plus more pictures. image
  • He looks great!!!!! Congrats. And hang in there for the NICU stay. My son was born at 28 weeks, 2lbs 15oz, and was in the NICU for 2 1/2 months. Not fun at all, but the day you bring him home will be the best day of your life!!!!

And back home again. Actually we came back last night and got home around 1:00am this morning. There was just no way that we could stay at my brother's place. I love him for letting us but he's a bachelor and my wife just can't do the things she needs to do in that kind of environment. It's kinda sad as he had made some plans of cooking out and such but we're just not into that right now.

So why we came home is other then my brother's place we are just physically and emotionally beat. We need to recharge our batteries so to speak and also get our other boy back home (he's coming home from his Grandparents in the morning) and start to get him involved with what's going on. We're going to go back up on Sunday and make it a day and after that I don't know.

Now as far as updates, Wyatt has been moved out of the actual NICU and has gone up on another floor where he has his own private room. He has a pretty good case of jaundice but is doing the photo therapy with no fuss. He did unfortunately have to have a tube for feeding but they are letting him bottle feed first and if he can't finish it in the time they give (30 minutes) they finish the feeding through the tube. It's not really a setback but just frustrating as the little guy has been trying his best but with the jaundice he is really tired.

Not a whole lot more to say. We're hanging in there and just wanting Wyatt to come home but not before he's ready.

Once again thanks for the well wishes and prayers. It means so much to me and my family.
