My first 1901 Indian Head Cent

BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
A few years ago when my grandmother passed away I received a small tin of about 100 heavily circulated Morgan and Peace dollars my grandfather kept bringing home from the Merchant Marines.

In this tin was an Indian Cent my Grandmother apparently pulled from circulation. While circulated and not worth much this is one of the coins that will stay in my collection a very, very long time. image

Not my series so if you want to help with the grade that would be great, my initial guess is around XF40. Let me know if I need to post larger images for grading purposes.

    I'd say AU, probably a 55.

It just struck me that I have virtually nothing tangible to remember my grandparents by. A few photos and some memories, both of which are fading with age.

    definitely high end AU image

Thanks for sharing your story too image

  • I don't know much about IHC's, but I think you were being too harsh on yourself for XF40. I'm in the AU crowd. Thanks for sharing your story.
  • Great coin. I rather have a coin with a lot of sentimental value over one with numerical value. That much more special.

AU53. Eye-appeal is lacking to merit a higher grade even though 55 may better describe the level of wear.

Neat coin and story Ben! I wouldn't part with it either. It's definitely high end AU maybe AU58 depending on how it looks in hand.

I'd give it an AU 55, nice strong ribbon detail as well as the LIBERTY

Definitely high end-ish AU. Great coin and story!
Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

I'm going to defy you all and call it MS-63RB. The surface dirt is all that is "worn" on that coin.

Oh my, guess I have a few things to learn, I tried looking at your grading .pdf from your website.

How do you wear dirt? image

Doesn't matter what the grade is, it is a unique and sentimental piece to you.

If I had to venture a guess with respect to a grade, I'd also be in the AU camp.

Based on the wide variety of responses I'm think I should have this graded on one of the quarterly specials to see who was the closest. Maybe I can get my Grandmothers name put on the slab to boot.

    I think it's a nice 58.

Not sure, I would have to ask PCGS if they could do that, maybe as a pedigree?
