What's hot in sports cards?

I use to collect Baseball and Football cards back in the early 80's hand picked quite a few key player cards from 70's, 80's and 90's and put them away for my son. Got discouraged though as the market at that time seemed to just get bombarded with new brands market was flooded. Is that still the case? What's the market like now is anything hot?

Don't forget Mike Greenwell and Greg Jefferies.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

apparently some people on here are being facetious. Kevin Maas is absolutely worthless.
I would say that the there are still a fairly large number of brands, but now they are moreso put out by just two companies Topps and Upperdeck. These make up a majority of the modern market.
The 70's stuff can have some pretty good value and the early 80's stuff isn't too bad. Most material from 1987-2003 or so is just referred to as junk by many collector's/dealers.
The new craze it or at least sense you stopped collecting would probably be that the brands are trying to attract interest by place 'chase' materials in their card packs. To me it mainly seems as a marketting play to charge more per pack than ever before with the off chance you may get an autograph or game used piece of equipment or different color variation in card form.
In addition, if your items are pack fresh and well centered, you may find you have some considerably more valuable items if you have them graded. For it to really be worth the grading fees on your 80's and 70's stuff though they would need to be close to 50/50 centered both to the top/bottom and left right on the card as well as the corners would have to be sharp (and they don't even always come out of packs close to these standards).
I hope this helps, I'll try to check back here if you got more questions.
