1960 and 1964 Topps

Due to Bob's generosity, I've started trying to put together the 1960 Topps set as well as the 1964 I've been working on for the last year. I enjoy the collecting aspect of them but sometimes the cards are just #'s on a checklist sheet. I thought you guys might have some intersting tidbits on the two sets that I might be missing. Any factoids?

Des are you building these sets raw or PSA slabbed?

If slabbed that is some undertaking!

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • The stars, graded....everything else raw. I don't have that kind of funds. I would expect these projects take me a couple of years as well, again, due to my limited slush funds.

That is a good way of doing it. I did it that way when I built the 55 set.

I did the 65 set completely graded and that turned into a pain.

I don't have much to add regarding those two sets other then the 64's are better to have the back
not scratched off and the 60's have some variations.

    Good luck!

    Good for you.
  • Some of my 64's are not scratched off but some are. Does that make a big difference in terms of resale value?

To some people it does. A card can't be 'mint' with it scratched. I am not sure how PSA considers it.

I built a '60 set the same way, stars PSA 6-7 and others raw. However, i did also get all the High# cards already graded PSA 6-7 also. The 1960 set has great color and design, a beautiful set.

    Best of Luck!
  • The 60 set is quickly becoming my favorite for the same reasons. I started the 64 set because I thought the design was just classic. At the time, I really didn't like a lot of colors but the 60 set is just amazing.

  • Beautiful cards. Thanks for sharing!
  • I thought I would update this thread with a little update. I don't have the time or the funds to run through a set getting everything I need in the quality I want in a couple of months. With the family (two kids and a wife with a pension to shop) I just don't have a lot of excess funds. I go about my collecting in an eclectic way with my collecting habits having ADHD.

At the moment, I have about 48% of the 1960 set (275/572) with the majority of cards in the ex-nm + condition. I try to pick up a couple when I have time to go to the card show or the card shop. I look for deals on ebay for lots but most of the time I'm out bid. I've also picked up some nice singles here on the boards. Here is a couple of pics of the stars I have so far. I also have Koufax but its heading to psa soon.

As far as my 1964 set, I'm 50.5% complete (297/587). This set I've actually started before the 60 set and bought graded on the stars and then cracked them out to put in a binder. I'm regretting that now but it displays better than having a mixed bag of graded and raw. No pics at the moment for these but I have the gibson, mccovey, mays all in a psa 8 cracked.

Another intention of mine to bump this thread is to continue the board love. I truly enjoy all of the threads about the adventure of the hunt, the collectors showing off their collection. Keep it up!

The longer I collect cards the more I like ALL the Topps sets (except maybe the 58 set), but you've picked two great ones to build. I started building the 56 set but now I'm thinking about the 61 set.

I like each set 1960 and 64! I will do each of them someday. But for now I'm working on my 61 set.
The 61 set at this point has some stars graded and the rest raw. I still need a large group of high numbers so I'll be on this set another couple of years i think.

DES, Those are 2 great choices. I often ponder doing a 1960 set in PSA 7. They are plentiful and affordable in that grade. Good luck on completing them! Here is the only graded 1960 I own.

  • I think that's a pretty good card to start with image

The 1960 set is very popular because IMO the cards are horizontal and that is a throwback.

They just look like a bb card should.

    Nice pickups!

That's been my general collecting style as well. Not that I don't sometimes buy some high grade commons, but only when I can "steal" 'em...whereby with a star player when I see a nicely centered card for sale, I'm willing to pay the going price for it. IE I'd rather have one high grade star card like a Mantle along with some inexpensive PSA 7 or raw commons, than a lower grade star card and some ultra expensive PSA 9 or 10 commons....for the same price.
  • Hi, is it just me or whenever one sees the intials DES they think of one of the greatest card collectors in the world? I wish you luck on your quest. Trapperlad.
  • Doing the '60 set myself... DES1984 what do you consider "star" cards for 1960 since you said you like to buy the stars graded. I'm about 80% done with the set. Mine sounds like about the same condition as yours. I have extras already... maybe we could trade some. Good luck! I've completed the '64 set already, working on '65-'67 now as well as '60. I usually get outbid on eBay too!!

Because this DES has the same initials as David E Selznik?

The '64 set is the most profitable set I've done by far. I built 2 of them in avg. NM at the same time about a year ago. I had most of the stars graded and then bought a few lots of graded commons. I had around $1800 in the first set and sold it on ebay for $3400+. The second set I had a little over $2000 in and was going to keep in my collection but recently traded it for an '85 Corvette which brought $5200 on ebay.

I will probably do the '60 set at some point because I've never done that one and I love the design of the '60's. I've had several raw and graded '60's Mantles and other stars. Good luck on your sets.

Great looking cards ................I especially like the Curt Flood and Gibson cards , as they were my favorite players along with Brock growing up ! I have the complete '64 set graded ( GPA - 8.27 .......about 190 Psa 9's ....... no 10'simage ) and is the set I remember the most growing up because of the Cardinals coming from behind to catch the Phillies to win the pennant and then beating the hated Yankee's in 7 Games .............I was 12 years old at the time , and it was my first Pennant and W.S. win as a rabid fan who listened to every game on the radio that year ( even put earphones on my transitor radio and would listen to the games on the West Coast until I couldn't stay awake any longer) ! Fun times , and I'm not quite the rabid fan I used to be ( sadly , of all people , Curt Flood changed all that when he brought about free agency....... which to me changed the way of the game !
