Remember those 1988, 1989, and 1990 Topps Folders?

They are also called Topps Sport Shots Portfolios. You would think that those things would be all over Ebay. There are a few of them, but I have been looking for Cardinals for a long time. I just bought a 1989 Topps Ozzie Smith for $1.00 plus shipping. Anybody have any of these laying around or know where I can get some?

Pretty sure BGS has a slab big enough for them as well.

I had those when I was in school but they got all tore up.
  • That's funny you bring these up, because I just raided my parent's attic and found an '89 Canseco folder. Are you only collecting Cardinals?

Yes, just Cardinals. After researching a little, Ozzie Smith is the only one in 1989. The SCD doesn't list the 1990 version, but there is a Don Mattingly on Ebay. I would like to confirm the Cardinals in this set.

In 1988, it was a larger set with 130 players. The Cardinals players were Jack Clark, Vince Coleman, Tony Pena, Ozzie Smith, and Todd Worrell.

Completely serious. They slab Sports Illustrated mags now, and I've seen pre-war baseball themed notebooks slabbed. I don't see why they wouldn't slab the folders.

If I were PSA, I would expand what I would slab, including magazines and others and add it
    to the registry.

BGS slabs 8x10 oversize cards. PSA may have a slab coming in October that is similar in size. I have lots of large cards I would like to have slabbed and I asked Joe via email if PSA would be looking into making larger slabs. He said "possibly in October but nothing is set in stone."

God I hope they do. I'd really like to add some stadium give away minor league team photos to my PSA Thomas collection.

I hate to admit this , but I have a full set of these from 88 and 89. I have a bunch of 90s too, but no checklist to know how many there are in that one. If anyone has such a list, I would appreciate seeing it.

Shane---I have a bunch of duplicate 88s and 89s (only a couple 90s). I will check through them. If I have any Cardinals, you are welcome to them

  • I still have the '90 Topps Don Mattingly one. Also have some that are identical to the Conlon Collection Babe Ruth cards.

Thanks. I don't need any from 1989 because I have the Ozzie and he is the only Cardinals.

In 1988, I need Jack Clark, Vince Coleman, Tony Pena, Ozzie Smith, and Todd Worrell.

In 1990, I am not sure because I don't have the checklist.

Man I wish Frank had been an important enough rookie for them to have made a folder for him.

I have the Nolan Ryan 1988 folder somewhere. As for them being holdered, IIRC, they measure around 9" x 11"; so if Beckett can holder up to 8" x 10", then the Topps folders are too big.

    Steve

Edited: I just found mine. I have the Ryan and Tony Gwynn from 1988, and they are actually 9 1/2" x 11 3/4"; so it's doubtful that they can be holdered at the present time.

  • The cool part is I gave mine to my son to use this year. He asked who the heck Don Mattingly was. image

I actually had them in high school! Not bad considering that was in 1995-99. They must've been in a clearance display or something. I still have the 1988 Ripken, 1989 Boggs, and 1989 Mattingly that I keep my old elementary/middle/high (respectively) school report cards and things.

I've got a stack of 1988 Butlers around here somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can remember where. IIRC, several years ago I won a lot of 50, which included 10 each of five different Indians. I want to say that Joe Carter was one of them, but I'm not exactly sure about that.
  • Dollar Tree (.99 Store) had them here about a year ago. The 1988 Topps ones.

Anybody know where to come across a 1990 checklist? SCD does not have one.

By the way, I did finally finish my Cardinals team set from 1988. I got them for $1 each. I was looking in the baseball card category and they were in a totally different category on Ebay.
