Where Would you Rank the '13-S Barber Dime...

in terms of scarcity within the series? Also, any estimates regarding the # of surviving examples extant?

I know that the '13-S mintage was pretty small at 500K or so but I would imagine that a lot more were saved than some of the 19th century date/mm's with similar (or slightly higher) mintages.

The 1913-S is a severely overrated date that has been hyped and hoarded for many years. The interest in this coin was generated by Numismatic News columnist Joel Edler (now retired) who mentioned his quest for multiple examples many times.

    Barber Dime Census

    To quote from the site:

The few differences of opinion were most visible on the 1913-S. Lawrence considered this low-mintage date (just 510,000) to be generally available, overrated, and hoarded, including in mint state (R2 there), and numerous members agreed. The collector with 74 of them had it in all grades G to MS. Others thought it vastly underrated, and one member said he thought it was the key to the set in grades over VG, including 1895-O! However, given the census results, it would appear the coin as a date is certainly quite widely available, but very tough in XF and AU. The survey respondents did boost its rarity rating to R5 in AU, but it remained high R4 in XF. Some debate was also evident on the 1896-O and –S coins, but as many people thought they were overrated as underrated (vastly in both cases!), thus leaving their rarity ratings where they were.

Looks like it depends on the grade. The 13-S was hoarded - but after most were released
into circulation. Similar to the 13-S Quarter and Half Dollars. This accounts for the vast majority
of those being hoarded as being in AG-VG condition.

It took me a few years to locate mine - a PCGS AU 58 and a raw 58 for the Dansco.

Believe it or not an AU 1913-S was the very first dime I bought when collecting these. JIm O'Donnell told me it was rare and to buy it if I was ever going to collect Barber dimes - so I did.

As far as dimes go, the '13-S is to the Barbers what 1844 is to the Seated series -- low mintage and hoarded but very available, more than you'd expect based on mintages.

All I know is I still have an XF in my set. And I got that from another collector (TCPIII) here on the forum. I still want one in AU. You see a few in lower grades, but very few in XF and above as others have said. I personally wouldn't put it in the 1844 catagory. And the 1844 is NOT that common in XF and above either.

The 13-S is overrated in 65-67 but a nice 64 is probably a bit underrated. The date was set aside and I believe had been highly promoted in a piggyback sort of way to the rare 13-S quarter. This date generally comes very nice so quality is usually not an issue unless the coin has been dipped out.

There are probably 12-15 dates that are tougher in my experience.
