My Quest Is Over. I Have Completed My Roberto Clemente Registry Set

I started my Clemente registry set in late Septemeber of last year. I picked up the last card I needed which was this beauty 1958. I couldn't find one at the National for the right price, so I had to buy it of the bay.

I want to thank board member Jeff Myers who helped me reach my goal by selling me 3 to 4 Clementes I needed.

Very nice seven sir. I sold my Clemente collection to diversify into other players besides Pirates recently. I will get them back but after "only" collecting Clemente for 23 years I got burned out.

With the 79 vending rip going on, I hope a few 8 worthy Stargells are pulled. You have dibs on mine if I pull it!

    Hi Bobby,

Congrats on completing your Clemente registry set!

I had the privilege of watching Roberto play throughout his entire major league career.

What a horrible New Year's Eve it was in 1972!

1979 Stargell is very tough guys. I have a 9 and a 8 so if interested let me know. Look at it's pop report.

Pappa J, Unfortunately I never saw him play. He was my dad's favorite player which made Clemente one of my favorite players.

It was a sad day when his plane went down in 1972.

I still can't believe he was not on the all-time century team. What a joke.

  • Congrats on that nice card and for completing the set!
  • Congralations on a completing the player set for one of the greatest sports icons ever. That's a really fine accomplishment, and consider that so many seek to do the same - it's a popular player set. The 1955 and 1956 Clementes are such striking beauties. Thanks for sharing scans on your Registry.

BTW, I don't know if you subscribe to Mike Denero's Vintage Sportscards Newsletter (it's a free e-subscription) but I authored an article all about the '55 Clemente RC which will appear in the next issue.
  • nice job! I need 2 more to complete my Clemente.Lou.

    Wow - Congratulations Bob!

You moved fast! Puts me to shame.

    Very nice 58T.

Saw Clemente play on TV - wish I had taken the time to see him play in person.

I just looked at your set - very, very nice.

Good luck on the rest of your set!

When interviewed Sparky Anderson was asked name 1 player he would pay to see play, he without hesitation said Clemente. He also stated it wasn't that close. The all time team thing was a joke but stat guys will always disagree. There is something to be said for flair, drama and style. Also, he was going to play more so his final stats have to be considered incomplete just like most war veterans.

Example, there are alot of guitar players in the world that have better technical skills than Jimi Hendrix, but none has ever touched his style and creativity (often imitated never bettered IMO).

I have a 79 stargell opc bvg gem mint. pop 1. Stargell and Parker are my two favorite players.

You can add me to the list of Clemente fans. He's the best ever Pirate player imo. Only Mays matched him in both offense and defense. He was still a dominate player towards the end of his career. Just watch the 71 series sometime. He was amazing.

  • Congratulations! I started probably 2 years ago and am only 50% of the way there. Of course, after getting engaged and then married, it's become a little more difficult to find the discretionary income to buy Clementes.

I never saw Clemente play but heard about him growing up in Pittsburgh - he had his 3000th hit on my 1st birthday. I wrote my college application essay on Roberto Clemente as my hero!
