What will these 2 Griffey's grade?

Well here is the first of many questions I'll be asking. I've been going through some of my stuff and picking out the ones that I might want to send to PSA. Since I did the bulk of my collecting in the 80's I have several Griffey's. What do you think these 2 '89 Upper Deck will grade? The one on the right is super sharp and the centering is really good. No blemishes whatsoever. The one on the left has a slight corner problem with the upper left corner and the centering isn't as good. Thanks.

Also, I have some older stuff too and was wondering if different weight is given by the graders depending on how old the card is? ie, is a 1960 PSA 8 the same condition as a 1990 PSA 8?

  • The Griffey on the right either has dust or a print mark in his mini-fro. Check the hologram on the back too. A lot of 89 UD Griffeys that should be 10's are in 8 or 9 holders because of damage to the hologram at the bottom of the card on the back.
  • Hard to tell w/o detailed corner scans but the one on the right is better centered you're right. Is that a print mark in his hair? That may hurt. If the corners are perfect and no print mark there, the one on the left is probably a 8, the right one may have a shot at a 10, but I'd like to see a closeup of the top right corner. It doesn't look as sharp as the other cards right corner. I may be wrong. Good luck with it.

  • the dust must be on my scanner because it's not in Ken's mini fro. The holograms are both good.

The one on the left looks like the upper left corner is dinged. Is it? If so, 7. One on right appears to have chance at 10 on the front. However, I have submitted a ton of "10's" that came back 8's or 9's.

Also make sure to look at the card under a good light at various angles as the card stock on the 89 Upper Deck scratched easily and isn't always easy to see.

7/8...PSA don't take kindly to corner dings on modern stuff......that first one must be from a factory set.

I've never owned one of them....

Is the one on the left miscut? The left side looks longer than the right side. Seems like a slight diagonal cut on the bottom.
  • the upper left corner on the left one is dinged. The right has 4 super sharp corners.

    Hi Adam,

The Griffey on the right looks like at least a 9 to me, with an outside chance of a 10.

If you're looking to sell them, I'd keep the one on the left raw.

    Good luck,

I'm pretty sure thats just a distortion fromthe scanner.

Looks like a slight curl in the card and not a miscut.

  • If the one on the left has no chance at a 9, sell it raw on eBay. They have been selling for about $25 each lately.

If I sold it on ebay, how would i list it? ie, what kind of condition would I state it as without deceiving the buyer?
