1964 Roosevelt SMS? How much???

DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭✭✭
Okay, for a few months now somebody has been putting a 1964 (yes, 1964) SMS Roosevelt Dime on Teletrade. The last time, the bid went up to $12,000, and the next morning it was reported as "not sold."

Does anybody know what it takes to buy one of these babies?

I thought it would go for about ten grand. I'm surprised the $12,000.00 point was hit and rejected.

Special Mint Sets. Issued to the public from 1965-1967. The 1964 sets were special sets not issued to the public.

The Mint produced about ten sets of 1964 coinage with a hard, satin appearance. (I know the Pop reports show more than ten of each of these- but many have been resubmitted over and over).
They were packaged up just like the Proof sets were (cellophane wrapper along with the tan envelope).
Through the years some of these have taken on a little spotting, especially the Lincolns and a couple of the Jeffersons.
I saw a Kennedy SMS and it had hard, silvery/gray irridecent toning. Very appealing! It was holdered by PCGS as SMS (MS)69 Specimen. It was back in the late eighties and the seller wanted $10,000.00 for it then. I wished I had then what it would have taken to own it.

Surprisingly, these come on the market fairly often. Teletrade seems to feature a couple of them every six months or so.

  • Looking at the pics on Teletrade, looks like these suffered like the Proof sets and a couple of these have lost their eye appeal due to the spotting Pat mentions. Since PCGS doesn't even include them in the new "with Variety" sets, they are relegated to novelty status. May explain why they tend to change hands on a regular basis. Lot of money to tie up if it can't help your set out.
