Mean "ex-wife" ebay description - 1991 Topps Desert Shield Set

I was surfing ebay and came across this insane item description.

the auction

If you don't want to click on the link, here is the description:

==========================================================
1991 Topps Desert Shield Complete Set (792 Cards)

Ok, so here is the deal…..These cards are not “Graded” not even sure how the hell they do that, but I know it costs a lot of money. I recently saw some guy boasting a set for sale on here claiming he paid $6000 to have this collection graded?!!! Excuse me but they are BASEBALL CARDS!!! I don’t get it. This is not some rare Diamond. Just a set of CARDS!

So now you’re asking how and why do I have this set? Lets see….Ex husband. I know I know, cry me a river…..I shouldn’t have taken his cards, blah, blah, blah blah….I honestly didn’t even know I had them. No, really, we divided the household effects and I moved out of state.

Prior to the actual moving out of state though, he came over to get some boxes from our storage. Apparently when he opened “his” boxes it turned out to be MY off season clothes. So, instead of bringing them back to me he said, “I just let my girl friends go through them. There isn’t much left. By the way, I was looking for my baseball cards do you have them?” Of which I replied “Nooooooooo” J

FAST FORWARDà two months later, I’m unpacking from my move and to my surprise……..a box of baseball/football/basketball cards……BTW what is the ball obsession in sports?...... …anyway.....….still pissy about the clothes, I didn’t tell him that I had them and put them in my storage. Now, 15+ years later, I’m sick to death of moving these cards around! This is where you come in.

I don’t know how “Perfect” these cards are………I know he spent HOURS and tons of $$$$$$ collecting the stupid things. He stared at every detail like a pot smoker studying a bean burrito outside the window at taco bell. They are clean and have been stored in those plastic sleeve things. I noticed everyone is concerned with the “corners” and I looked through and they all appear to be sharp --I remember him being obsessed with no bubble gum marks--- I am however NOT AN EXPERT and I do not WARRANTY that these cards are PSA Anything. But at the same time......these COULD be the best set EVER graded.....still a TBD.

I am throwing in some random duplicates and there are a small group of these that I know are not perfect because when the idiot first started to “collect” these he left his trader set on top of his car and drove off in the rain. Most of them were ruined but a few survived with a corner or two bent. You are obviously not bidding on this auction for these, but I frankly don’t want them so you get the whole lot. You can throw them away if that is what you choose to do.

SOOO now what I do know about these cards………Ex was Military and a pack of these cards was given out to each member stationed in the Middle East during Operation Desert shield and Desert Storm. My ex started collecting them from his friends who didn’t want them. He traded and traded and traded and traded and….(ok you get the picture) until he had to start buying and buying and (I guess you know where I am going with this.) I recently read on a posting that these cards have been so sought after that there have been instances of forgeries…….and “you should be cautioned on purchasing ungraded cards”………..The only thing I can really attest to in this cautionary tale is that he was part of the DS operation and all cards were obtained at the time of release. No cards have been added. They have been in my J possession since 1991/1992. They have the gold foil stamp on them reading Operation Desert Shield. And there is no way I’m paying $6000 to have them graded!

So now it’s up to you. I am putting a reserve on this auction, because although I don’t understand the obsession…….I’m also not stupid and I get the rarity of these cards and more importantly this is a complete set. and........I have clothes to replace..............J

Due to the nature of this purchase I am not accepting returns. Please ask any questions. I will only ship these insured and to a confirmed address.

Thanks for looking.

P.S. Check out my other auctions for his other cards..............Some really old looking ones.....quite a few from the 60's.

Happy Bidding!

Sounds like a bad Craig's List writeup.

I'd want to see a closeup of the foil stamps before I bid on those.

she knew enough to set a pretty high reserve price..

I'd stay far, far away from this auction. Anyone that needs to do a write up like that seems like they are hiding something

Thanks - I should have been more specific.

I'd like to see scans of the star cards. Showing a genuine common doesn't quite convince me that they're all real.

Best line of the whole description. I don't collect modern at all...are these things actually worth much?

Oh...I absolutely agree. I wouldn't judge the authenticity of the set by looking at a Darrin Fletcher card, either.

Written in scameese, with the same skills used by the guys that
sell "use my system to get rich" in the bizop magazines.

Take it to the bank: There was no ex-spouse and the cards are
    all carp.

The gendergenie-algo puts the bias toward the listing having
actually been written by a female well within the error margin.

    Female Score: 1009

    Male Score: 953

Throwing out the overweighted words, I would conclude the
listing was written by a MALE.

If they're legit yeah... but something tells me someone bought a binder and a regular 1991 Topps factory set, then had fun with a foil embosser.

GG is - using an unmodified weighting - only about 40%+ accurate.

Throwing out words that GG wrongly thinks are either F/M, the
accuracy can be moved deep into the 80% range.

    .....

Scammers can also use GG to sound "bitter" or any other way
    they want to sound.

I was thinking the same thing: "obtained at the time of release"? "gold foil stamp"?

And "her" disdain for the cards is a little too over-the-top to be believable

    BS
  • Hey man how much for the burrito?
