81 Down--1936 Gallaher Film Episodes Completed in PSA 8 or Better

As a direct result of me posting the dozen sets I needed just one card in PSA 8 or better on the PSA Message Boards, I have completed another set with each card PSA 8 or better--1936 Gallaher Film Episodes.

In February of this year, I bought two complete sets in PSA 8 or better(1939 Gallaher My Favourite Part and 1938 Ogden's Actors Natural and Character Studies) from non-sports collector extraordinaire Keith Pennington. He also sold me this set which contained 21 9s, 26 8s and 1 psa 7. Not many Gallahers have been graded and I expected a struggle to find the last upgrade.

Then two weeks ago I got an e-mail from Mike Cable:

"Hi Jim,

I saw your post on the PSA Message Boards. I have the Film Episodes #23 you are looking for(in PSA 8). I just started this set about 6 months ago. I realize this card does not have a lot of value but if you send me your address I'll shyip the card to you. I know the joy of getting that last card to finish a set so I'm happy to help another collector.

Cheers, Mike"

"Thank you Mike. I insist on paying you something for the card."

"Hi Jim,

Please don't worry about it. I had some fellow collectors send me cards for free so I am just passing it forward. Congratulations on a beautiful set.

Cheers, Mike."

What a wonderful thing. Frank Evanov has send me cards for free in the past but it does not often. I wanted to highlight what a wonderful gesture this was and as Mike said I will find opportunities to "pass it forward".

Back to the Film Episodes set, it is beautiful. Highlights in my mind are cards of WC Fields, Shirley Temple, Will Rogers, Joan Blondell, Maureen O'Sullivan, Mae West, Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn and Laurel & Hardy. My set stands at #2 on the PSA Set Registry with an 8.54 Set Rating, number two behind Keith Pennington. I will let it rest at that level.

This set represents my 10th non-sports set completed in PSA 8 or better and my 81st overall. The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets completed in PSA 8 or better. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goal.

Jim you are making great progress, congratulations.
81 complete sets in PSA-8 or higher is mind boggling.

    But shouldn't it be 82?
The PSA set I send you a couple of weeks ago isn't listed...jay

    Jay,

If you could find me an upgrade for that one psa 7 that is in the set, I would be happy to include it.

I like the set but some of these non-sports sets have very low pops on the cards and it is tough to find that one card.

We are talalking about 1962 Barratt-Warriors Set. I need card #17 Assyrian--in 8 or better to complete.

Jim, the overall set grade is almost 8 and half. No one will worry about that lone PSA-7 image
You can include it w/ your next submission batch to PSA for a review, if memory serves it didn't look too shabby

    Jay,

Ha! If I could just sneak my sets through with 1 psa 7 I would be almost to 100 sets. I'm not a big guy for resubmissions. I would probably get a 7.5 which doesn't work either.
