  • Common date priced with bullion all the way to 61.

    I'd leave it raw.

Counterfeits do exist for this date so slabbing it for authenticity wouldn't be the worst idea ever but if it were mine I'd leave it raw..

True but couldn't he weigh it up and compare to a genuine one or do a specific gravity test???

I'd be reluctant to buy it unless it was slabbed, so to me at least it might not sell as quickly or for as much unless it was slabbed.

    NGC's pretty cheap, isn't it?

Maybe you'll get lucky and it will come back a 62 or 63?

With those marks, especially on the rim, it wouldn't come back higher than a 61 and, if there's any wear, it may come back as a 55 or 58.

Ah, I see what you mean. Still, I think I'd want it "genuine" if nothing else.

The odds are way against running into fake $20's unless you are getting them off ebay or from private sellers who know nothing about what they have. If it's got nice frosty luster and minute die polish lines/die cracks it's more than likely good. Most of the bad gold looks almost semi-PL with weakish details, tooling marks and no signs of die polish. Check around the date, stars, etc.

Doesn't look to be mounted and appears to be Unc. These big gold coins often get some decent cuts on the rims that don't prevent being certified. Because of the current $175 spread between slabbed unc vs raw slider I'd probably spend the money to get it slabbed by PCGS or NGC. Get some opinions on it at your next show as to whether it has any signs of problems that would prevent a 61 grade. Really no downside to trying to slab it considering it's $25-$30 grade fee/postage vs. $175. If you know someone sending gold in you may be able to piggyback and save on postage.

This is true. You should at least verify the density and dimensions and get it in an Air-Tite or similar holder if you don't have it slabbed.

I've got several '04's that are in Coin World "slabs" in the SDB. They all checked out on weight/dimensions and are EF/AU pieces. Just nice bullion to me.

Hummmmm...but there's the other side of the coin. What if it's just a cool piece to hold and look at. So, put it in a good flip and maybe even take it out once in a while and maybe let someone hold it and go Ohhhhhhhh Ahhhhhh. The $20 lib is a very cool piece and it is a beautiful, heavy sucker and hard to beat for sheer shock value to the noncollectors and the $20 libs are fairly common.

At first glance, the fields and devices on that coin are crisp, clean and lusterous as is very common on the later libs and the coin does not show any conspicuous abuse. So, maybe you can get a 61 but with that obvious rim damage it's probably, as mentioned here...a 58-60, to me anyway, off of a photo but it's a damn nice 58 for sure. And, besides, what's all that stuff on her cheek...die clash, bag marks? Just making a case for just keeping that exceptionally nice coin just like it is and enjoy it live and in color instead of stuffing it into plastic case and dropping it into the slab holder, and throwing it into the sdb where it will preserve a little value but it won't be nearly the fun of handing that big boy over to your 10 year old kid or your grandchild. I guess the real question is...Is it $100 worth of fun?

I've been fooled by perfect counterfeits before (ironically, this exact date and type) which were minted of correct weight and composition. So slabbing does have its advantages, though if you're holding it for its gold content, it doesn't really matter if it's fake or not.
