My first attempt at a mini sketch card.
Seeing some of the custom work that is done around these parts and other forums, I've been wanting to try my hand at sketch cards. Anyway, the wife fell asleep and I had nothing better to do.
I will say, this is much harder than working on an 8x10 or 11x16 piece...on the other hand, it only took 30 minutes as compared to 2 hours.
Next time, I will sketch on sketch paper and apply it to a backing rather than sketch directly on a glossy piece of cardstock. The gloss limits the depth of the sketch.

That's great work. It be nice to see one sent TTM for an auto, and have it PSA/DNA'd.

In hindsight, it would have been much easier to have made his head larger. I'd also like to try to do some full body shots.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope to really develop my skills at drawing in miniature. It doesn't translate as easily as I had expected it to.

Do you make any with color?
EB, to answer your question, this is the first I've attempted. I do have thoughts of doing some stippled color images though.

Hilarious. I hadn't even thought of the Ross connection when I said that - awesome!!!

Very nice start, it looks great!
You got me in a sketch mood, so I made a thread of my Elgin Baylor sketch.
Can't imagine trying to draw anything on such a small space.
I've never been able to draw actual people that well. Everything I do comes out looking like cartoons.

To Jeff:
Being able to line draw takes a lot of faith in one's hand. I can't line draw; I don't even try, unless it's with software. The benefit to sketching is that my pencil rarely leaves the paper and a poor stroke is easily masked by another. Line images don't give you that grace and are key to animated drawings...a skill set unto itself. Good job!
I never have to erase! I just add more...much easier.

I actually do everything in pencil first and to make it stand out go back over it with pen when I'm satisfied with my results.
The one good thing is there is (in my opinion) no right or wrong way of doing this. My boy (7) get's so frustrated while drawing and I keep telling him to take his time and express himself in his own way.

As for stock, try chipboard. Also do a search on eBay for "artist sketch cards" to get an idea of the different types of media that come pre-packaged.
<< <i>Nice work Ross, even though I think it looks more like Willie Mays

Haha, it actually does show a strong resemblance.
I'm going to try a few more, we'll see what happens.
There are several others I would like to try and do as well. Right now I am working on the Mad Hatter played by Johnny Depp, it is looking good but hand control SUCKS

Forgot to ask do you recognized the artwork?
To the art above me. Umm. Is that...nevermind. Maybe it's just me.
Anywho- Here's the only "art" I own. I didn't do it. Found it on ebay. Someday I'l have the $ to get something made like I want.
